After more than three decades together as man and wife, a devastating tragedy struck the Bermans. On May 9, 2017, Katherine Ann Berman died in a ghastly car accident at the age of 67. According to official reports, it was Kathy who caused the accident while driving her Lexus SUV on Sherman Hill Road in Woodbury, western Connecticut, when she rear-ended a man’s car, killing them both. While the other motorist, an 87-year-old man Edward Bertulis rammed into a pole, Kathy’s vehicle landed in a nearby stream. She was pronounced dead at the scene but Bertulis who sustained multiple injuries was rushed to Waterbury Hospital and later lost the battle for life.
Investigations revealed that Katherine Ann Berman was drunk driving as she had a blood-alcohol level that was higher than Connecticut’s legal limit. Through toxicology tests, traces of oxycodone, tramadol, and anti-depressants were discovered in her system. More so, Berman who had just left a nearby Market Place after having lunch and drinks with her sister was speeding, not maintaining her lane and did not apply the brakes before slamming into the back of Bertulis’ car. On the other hand, Bertulis whose wife died in 2015 was on his way back from her gravesite as he did every day since her death before his car was struck by Katherine. He was not wearing a seatbelt at the time the incident occurred.
During a police interview, Kathy’s sister, Sandra Lewis confirmed that they both had lunch at the Market Place where Berman enjoyed a combination of bread, stuffed clams, and oysters. Though Lewis admitted that her sister downed her lunch with one martini, she, however, claimed that Kathy did not finish it. According to Lewis, besides the back brace Berman wore because of the problems with her lower back, she seemed just fine until the accident.
