As the Olympic tournaments draw nearer, Nigerian football fans are certain to miss Nigerian striker, Kelechi Iheanacho’s presence at Rio.
The young and talented Nigerian international footballer, Kelechi Iheancho will not be playing at Rio Olympics with the Super Eagles. This is regardless of the fact that he has been named in Nigeria’s provisional 35-man squad.
The 19-year-old Nigerian striker stunned the soccer world last season with 14 goals. With the resumption of former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola, Iheanacho has a lot of convincing to do in Man City.
“I am happy with what I did last season and now I have to work really hard this season to get something for the team and work for the team as well.”
For the young forward, he would have wanted to be there at Rio, but it is not solely his decision to make.
“I don’t know if my team and my country have decided.”
“If your country wants you to play for them you surely have to do so, but it’s not up for me to decide. I don’t know if it has been concluded or not.”
On the orders of the new coach, kelechi will have to trade the Olympics for a full pre-season training with him. Both men are out on a mission to make bright impressions in the team.
While the Nigerian striker needs to impress the new coach, Pep has also vowed to register a huge success with the team in England.
The reality however is that if Iheanacho makes it to Rio, he would miss the opening weeks of the Premier League season. Thus Man City thinks it will be more beneficial for him to stay back and train for the Premier League season.
The club has written the Nigerian Football Federation(NFF) to say that the striker will not be present at the Olympics.
