Exploring Kelis’ Early Start as a Musician, Relationship With Nas and Remarriage

Kelis Rogers is a gifted singer, songwriter and chef who was launched into stardom following the release of her debut studio album titled, ‘Kaleidoscope’. The album which was released by Virgin Records on December 7, 1999, fused a blend of disco and jazz music from the ‘70s. With the tremendous success the album recorded, the American singer went ahead to recorded several other hit albums which earned her international recognition.

The prolific singer has also collaborated with other big shots in the music industry which include the likes of Busta Rhymes, Clipse and Enrique Iglesias. Kelis have also embarked on several musical tours over the years promoting her music which further increased her fame. However, the award winning singer did not achieve these heights by mere luck as she started to hone her skills from an early age.

Kelis Roger’s Passion For Music Blossomed At A Young Age

Kelis Rogers was born on 21st August 1979 in Harlem, New York, United States of America. The talented singer was raised alongside two older sisters and one younger sister in the famous Frederick Douglass Houses situated on the Upper West of Manhattan in New York City. Her father, Kenneth Rogers, was an African-American Pentecostal minister and jazz musician. Prior to becoming a minister, Kenneth was a professor at the foremost Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. Kelis’ mother, Eveliss Rogers was a fashion designer of Chinese and Puerto Rican descent.

The American singer initially attended Manhattan Country School. It was gathered that she learned how to play the piano, saxophone, and violin while she was enrolled at the private school. She was also reputed to have sung in her local church choir as a during her early years. Later on, Rogers was sent to the prestigious Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts for her high school education.

Like most teenagers, Kelis lived a rather wayward life, frequently clashing with her mum and siblings. The star singer would later reveal in an interview that her behavior led to her parents sending her out of the house at age 16. This didn’t stop her education though but she had to take up work as a bartender and later on as a sales associate at a clothing store to cater to her needs.

She Rose to Fame With The Release of the Album Kaleidoscope

Upon graduating from high school, a close friend of Kelis’ introduced her to the production duo of Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, best known as The Neptunes. Rogers built a cordial working relationship with the celebrity producers. They, in turn, helped her land a recording contract with the foremost British record label – Virgin Records.

Rogers started recording her debut studio album, Kaleidoscope, in mid-1998. The album which was produced by The Neptunes was completed within a year. Following its release on December 7, 1999, the highly-rated album peaked at #144 on the acclaimed U.S Billboard 200 chart. It was both a critical and commercial success domestically and internationally. The album was certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry in the United Kingdom.

The album went as far as reaching #43 on the UK Albums Chart as well as top 5 on the Top Heatseekers chart. The lead single of the album, ‘Caught Out There’, was an instant hit and was featured on #54 on the Billboard Hot 100. The widely acclaimed singer also won her first set of awards in 2001- the NME Award for Best R&B/Soul Act and the Brit Award for International Breakthrough Act.

She Left Virgin Records To Release Her Album, Wanderland

Virgin Records released Kelis’ second studio album on October 17, 2001. Young, Fresh n’ New, which was the only single on the album, peaked at #32 on the UK Singles Chart. The album was released in Europe, Latin America, and Asia, but not in North America. This was due to a major reshuffling that resulted in the record label laying off the production crew of Kaleidoscope. Kelis left the label later that year stating that her new production crew didn’t believe in her next project, Wanderland.

Since the release of Wanderland, Rogers has gone to release 4 additional albums – Tasty (2003), Kelis Was Here (2006), Flesh Tone (2010), and Food (2014). Kelis has also headlined a couple of tours – Tasty Down Under Tour (2004), All Hearts Tour featuring Robin Miriam Carlsson (2010), Intimate Venues Tour (2014), and Kaleidoscope 20th Anniversary Tour (2020).

Apart from her music, Roger is also a professional chef having undergone training at the Le Cordon Bleu culinary school from 2006 to 2010. She co-authored a cookbook with Lauren Pesavento. She is currently a participant on Netflix’s Cooked with Cannabis cooking series.

Kelis Was Once Married To Fellow Musician, Nas

Kelis and Former spouse, Nas

The New York native met the acclaimed rapper Nas at an after-party for the MTV Video Music Awards in 2002. They hooked up and started dating almost immediately. Sometime in 2004, mainstream media was awash with information that the pair were engaged. News of their engagement was received with much enthusiasm by fans of the celebrity couple.

Sometime in 2005, the pair exchanged marital vows at a private wedding ceremony in Atlanta, Georgia. Sadly, their marriage was short-lived and considerably brief as it lasted for only a couple of years. Kelis officially filed for divorce on April 30, 2009, citing irreconcilable differences. Reports indicated that at the time of filing the divorce papers, Rogers was seven months pregnant.

The music star gave birth to her son, Knight, on July 21, 2009. Nas reportedly went against Kelis’ wish of keeping things under wrap by announcing the birth of their son at an event in Queens. The union between Nasir and Kelis officially came to an end on May 21, 2010.

The Singer Claimed Her Separation From Nas Was Caused By Domestic Violence

In 2012, Rogers accused the rap star of abusing her while they were married. Nas refuted the allegations by saying that Kelis wanted to slander him while they were in court in a custody battle for Knight. The singer countered again by alleging that the award-winning rapper was unfaithful during their marriage and had drinking problems.

To make matters worse, Kelis said that Nas was also unfaithful in their marriage as he was involved with other women for over two years even while they were married. The pair have been in a longstanding custody battle over their son, Knight. According to Kelis, Nas hadn’t been keeping up to his paternal end of the bargain. She said she had not received any type of financial support from Nas, leaving her to cater for their sons’ needs all alone.
