KMTC Courses, Application Requirements and School Fees Structure

The Kenya Medical Training College is an institution managed by the country’s Ministry of Health. The Institution was established by the government under the 1927 Act of Parliament Cap 261 of Kenya Law, further amended by Act No.5 of 2019. The college has many faculties, all geared towards training medical health practitioners in all medically inclined fields. The KMTC courses that are offered vary according to the numerous departments that fall under the various faculties.

Over the years, KMTC has fulfilled its motto of Training for Better Health by producing responsible professionals with integrity who give their best towards achieving a healthy society. Before a candidate is offered admission into the Institution, various requirements are to be met for certificate, diploma, higher diploma, short courses candidates.

A Highlight Of KMTC Faculties, Departments, and Courses

KMTC has seven faculties, 18 departments, and 83 medical-related courses. The following are the KMTC courses arranged according to their faculties and departments:

Faculty of Public Health Sciences

This faculty consists of four different departments which offer fifteen courses at different levels. The following are departments and courses they offer:

  • Department of Health Promotion and Community Health

The department is responsible for training students on the best way of sensitizing the public on how best to improve health behavior, attitudes, knowledge, and skills. This department offers five different courses, which are as follows:

  1. Higher Diploma in Health Education and Promotion
  2. Diploma in Health Promotion
  3. Diploma in Medical Social Work
  4. Certificate in Health Promotion for the Deaf
  5. Certificate in Community Health Assistant
  • Department of Community Oral Health

The department teaches students the various means of conducting general oral management. The oral management includes community sensitization on regular oral checkups, advice on proper oral health, examination and dental X-rays, performing a preventive treatment, which provides for topical fluoride and coatings, fillings, and extractions. KMTC offers only one course in this department and also a single program for the department and that is Diploma in Community Oral Health.

  • Department of Nutrition and Dietetics

The department aims to provide high-quality, innovative food and nutrition training. Graduates will get the required certifications that will guarantee them recognition as nutritionists and dieticians. The department offers only one course in two different categories, which are:

  1. Diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics
  2. Certificate in Nutrition and Dietetics
  • Department of Public Health Sciences

The department offers highly rated training on proper ways of assisting health professionals in preventing the occurrence and reoccurrence of diseases amongst the public. The public in this context can mean a neighborhood or even the world at large. Students learn how to assess and monitor communities at risk of any disease to identify health-related. The department also trains students to ensure that the public has access to appropriate health care through promotions and disease prevention services. Seven courses are offered in this department in three different levels, and they are as follows:

  1. Higher Diploma in Food Science and Inspection
  2. Higher Diploma in Solid Waste Management
  3. Higher Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety
  4. Higher Diploma in Epidemiology
  5. Diploma in Public Health
  6. Diploma in Medical Social Work

Faculty of Diagnostic Sciences

The faculty of diagnostic sciences trains young professionals to improve human health through research, education, clinical care, and public awareness. The faculty has a total of fourteen courses offered in the two departments. They are as follows:

  • Department of Medical Imaging Sciences

The department offers quality training on providing the best medical imaging and image-guided therapy services for different medical needs in the country and beyond. The department also exposes the students to the cost-efficient ways of providing the best medical imaging services through practicals. The department is made up of five different courses in two levels, and they include the following:

  1. Higher Diploma in Radiography and Imaging-Ultrasonography
  2. Higher Diploma in Radiation Therapy
  3. Higher Diploma in Computed Tomography
  4. Higher Diploma in Magnetic Resonance Imaging
  5. Diploma in Radiography and Imaging
  • Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences

The department is geared towards developing competent and efficient medical laboratory scientists that have the required skills, character, and professional integrity to function in the health care sectors of the country. This department offers eight different courses in two levels, they include:

  1. Higher Diploma in Blood Transfusion Science
  2. Higher Diploma in Clinical Chemistry
  3. Higher Diploma in Hematology
  4. Higher Diploma in Histopathology and Cytopathology
  5. Higher Diploma in Microbiology
  6. Higher Diploma in Parasitology and Entomology
  7. Higher Diploma in Virology
  8. Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science

Faculty of Information Technology and Medical Education

The faculty of information technology and medical education trains students in health records and research. The faculty offers four courses in two departments and at three levels. The following are the departments and courses that they offer:

  • Department of Health Records and Information

Students in this department enjoy proper training in the use of information technology to ensure accessibility, accuracy, availability, integrity, and security of patients’ medical information. The department prepares students to act as administrators and educators. The department has one course offered in two stages of academic level. They are as follows:

  1. Diploma in Health Records and Information Technology
  2. Certificate in Health Records and Information
  • Department of Medical Education

Students are trained to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills in the medical profession. They also get involved in promoting research and articles in medical education. The department offers two courses at a single academic certificate level. They are as follows:

  1. Higher Diploma in Medical Education
  2. Higher Diploma in Health Systems Management (Distance Learning program)

Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences

KMTC courses offered under the faculty come in two academic certificate programs of a single department.

  • Department of Pharmacy

The department is focused on developing pharmacy services through research and education. They train students who compete in the development of reliable drugs for improved health care in the country. The department offers its courses in the following levels:

  1. Higher Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy
  2. Diploma in Pharmacy

Faculty of Nursing

The Institution offers twelve courses in three academic certificate levels. They include the following:

  • Department of Nursing

The nursing department of KMTC aims to train students to ensure effective optimal patient care through a professional standard and criteria-based evaluation. The department offers twelve different courses at different levels, and they are as follows:

    1. Higher Diploma in Kenya Registered Nurse Anesthesia
    2. Higher Diploma in Critical Care Nursing
    3. Higher Diploma in Pediatric Nursing
    4. Higher Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing

The faculty of clinical sciences see to training students in various fields of how to run the daily health improvement of patients. The Institution offers twenty-two courses in the two departments of the faculty of clinical sciences. They are as follows:

  • Department of Orthopedics and Trauma Medicine

Students are trained in orthopedic trauma surgery and how to manage orthopedic trauma injuries. They also get involved in managing post-traumatic infections of the musculoskeletal system. The KMTC courses that are offered under this department come in two levels which include the following:

  1. Diploma in Orthopedic and Trauma Medicine
  2. Certificate in Orthopedic and Trauma Medicine

Faculty of Rehabilitative Sciences

The faculty of rehabilitative sciences trains scholars on improving the quality of life for communities and others. There are six departments in this faculty in the KMTC:

  • Department of Dental Technology

The department of dental technology trains students on the theoretical and practical aspects of making various dental appliances such as dental braces, orthodontic appliances, dentures, bridges, crowns, and more. The only course offered by the department of dental technology is the diploma course in Dental Technology.

  • Department of Optometry

The department of optometry instills knowledge on the practical and theoretical aspects of checking the eyes. They are also trained to diagnose, treat, and manage eye diseases, visual impairments, injuries, and other eye defects. They are charged with prescribing contact lenses and eyeglasses for patients. The KMTC courses that the department of optometry offers are as follows:

  1. Higher Diploma in Optometry (Contact Lenses)
  2. Diploma in Optometry
  • Department of Medical Engineering

Students of this department are taught how to construct or design equipment such as machines for diagnosing health-related issues, artificial internal body organs, replacements of body parts, and many more. They also see to the maintenance, installation, and provision of technical supports for biomedical equipment. The Institution offers four courses under Medical Engineering Department, and they are as follows:

  1. Higher Diploma in Diagnostic Equipment
  2. Higher Diploma in Dialysis
  3. Diploma in Medical Engineering
  4. Certificate in Medical Engineering
  • Department of Occupational Therapy

The occupational therapy department trains students to promote physical health, well-being, mental health by supporting the work performance of people who have developed or are at risk of developing psychological and physical health issues. There are two courses offered in different levels of the KMTC department of occupational therapy, and they include:

  1. Higher Diploma in Community Based Rehabilitation
  2. Diploma in Occupational Therapy

  • Department of Orthopedic Technology

The department trains students on how to assist orthopedic surgeons properly. They are mainly taught how to help in applying and removing casts, walking aids, etc. The students are also taught how best to advise patients on using the walking tools and the risks of not using the provided mechanisms. The department also offers training on how to make adjustments to certain types of traction. The department of orthopedic technology offers courses in two levels, and they are as follows:

  1. Higher Diploma in Orthopedic Technology (orthotics)
  2. Diploma in Orthopedic Technology
  • Department of Physiotherapy

The department trains students on the causes, predisposing factors, and ways of delivering checkups on occupational or sporting injuries. The students also learn to give rehabilitation for pre and post-surgery exercises. KMTC offers three courses in this department, and they are:

  1. Higher Diploma in Orthopedic Manual Therapy
  2. Higher Diploma in Neuro-Rehabilitation
  3. Diploma in Physiotherapy

Short Courses

Requirements For Admission Into KMTC

To gain admission into the Kenya Medical Training College for any diploma program, candidates must have a minimum grade of C- in necessary subjects of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education. It is also required that the candidate should have a certificate in the application field for upgrading courses. For higher diploma courses the candidate is expected to have a diploma certificate in the course they are applying for. Below is a breakdown of the requirements for getting admitted into KMTC:

For Normal Students

In this context, normal students are indigenes of Kenya and those that have acquired their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education. It also covers candidates in the regular and self-sponsored category of the admission process. Below are the requirements for normal students by programs:

Certificate Programs

The candidate is expected to have a minimum cumulative grade of C- in relevant subjects.

Diploma

The candidate is expected to have gained a cumulative grade of C in related subjects like Kiswahili, English, Biology, Biological Sciences, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and Physical Sciences in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education.

Upgrading Programs

Candidates in this program must have acquired certificates in the field they want an academic upgrade in and must have worked for at least two years in that field.

Higher Diploma

Candidates seeking to be admitted to KMTC for the Higher Diploma program must have gotten a diploma in the course they are applying for and have a minimum of two years of working experience in that field.

Short Courses

The short courses are mostly specially arranged courses for individuals, corporate bodies, and government agencies. They are to place a written request to the Institution, and the Institution will set proper arrangements in place for the course.

For International Students

International students for Kenya Medical Training College are students who did not attend school in Kenya but are interested in obtaining medical Training in KMTC. The Institution requires the following from the student:

  • Proof of grade equivalent to cumulative grade C in a recognized secondary school or its level for admission into diploma courses.
  • A certificate from a recognized institution and a two-year working permit for international students that wish to go for an upgrade program.
  • The foreign student must show a diploma certificate or equivalent and must have worked for two years before applying for any Higher diploma course in KMTC.

The Fee Structure of KMTC  

Kenya Medical Training College provided different payment options for the categories of students listed below:

  • Regular students
  • Self-sponsored students
  • Foreign students

The above options have different payment plans for students, and they all depend on the category of such students. The regular students go with a highly subsidized fee of about half of the tuition fee for a self-sponsored student. These first categories are strictly for citizens of Kenya and not for any international student.

International students can tap from this excellent learning environment by paying an affordable but not subsidized fee. This is because the Institution made it clear that the medical training is for the enhancement of Kenya’s health sector and other east African countries. To this regard, international students are given a different tuition fee, but the rest remains standard with other categories. Other Relevant Charges for Students

Other relevant charges can be incurred by the students while engaged with the school activities. It is noteworthy so that these charges are to be taken into consideration in the educational planning of a student.

Accommodation

KMTC does not offer free accommodation but has provided an affordable hostel of two categories for the same rate for the three categories of students in the college.

A private room provided by the Institution costs Kshs 50,000 every Semester, while the hostel standard room, which two students can share, costs Kshs 30,000 every Semester for each of the students. Students are allowed to find their choice of accommodation and stay off the school premises.

Medical Equipment

The cost of acquiring some personal medical equipment that will help the student in the practical aspects of the study is also covered by the student. The Institution urges students to get this equipment before venturing into the practical aspects of the training. Personal medical equipment include the likes of stethoscopes and others are required.

Stationeries

Students take full responsibility for all the required stationery that will help them in their training exercise. Stationeries include textbooks, exercise books, pens, pencils, calculators, etc.
