Lady Frere Sheep– Yesterday the world marveled at the South African Human Lamb Story.
The lamb appeared to have human features and that gave room to certain superstitious beliefs.
South Africans in the area linked the oddity to a product of either bestiality or witchcraft.
Many who have seen the picture of the sheep are almost strongly convinced, bestiality was at play in this scary case.
While the actual cause of this phenomenon has been detected, biologists are suggesting this is most probably a case of malformation which can come about as a result of viral infections.
South Africa’s Eastern Cape Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform,(ECDRDAR), have confirmed that the images were real and photo-shopped.
“We call on the local community not to panic over this deformed lamb. We can confirm that this deformed lamb is not a progeny of sheep ovum and a human sperm.”
“Virus infections in early stages of pregnancy may infect the foetus and lead to the development of malformations in the growing foetus. It is likely that this is what happened to the Lady Frere sheep‚”
According to Dr Mrwebi, the virus was launched into the foetus’ blood via the mother; thus affecting the “critical stage of development”.
“The infected foetus then‚ as a result‚ failed to form properly‚ leading to the deformity that it became.”
“The department’s veterinary officials will conduct a postmortem on this deformed lamb and its results will be communicated to the public by the department once complete‚”
While South African medical experts and international observers have picked interest in the Lady Frere sheep, bestiality echoes even stronger in the minds of the people. A majority of reactions on social media suggests it so.
From the gathered reactions, there are concerns for places where bestiality has either been decriminalized or a common practice.
In Africa for instance, Bestiality is illegal but however practiced in secrecy.
Last year Canada partially outlawed bestiality. The constitution exonerates sexual acts with animals as long as there is no penetration. Some other countries of the world have this stance too.
Over 42 American states and counting have enacted laws that prohibit sexual contact between humans and animals. In Michigan and Idaho, bestiality and zoo-sexual activities attract life imprisonment.
UK has outlawed bestiality. The recent constitution however reduced the sanction from a life sentence to 2 years imprisonment.
Bestiality is totally illegal with discretionary sanctions according to the country.
In South Africa, Bestiality is illegal. In cases of zoophilic pornography the culprit faces a maximum of 5 years in prison and R200,000 fine
With the possibility of zoo-sexual relations in some parts of the world whether legally or illegally one wonders what an offspring of 2 mismatched species can produce.
On that note, Dr Mrwebi of SA’s ECDRDAR said:
“It is worth noting that a sheep has 28 pairs of chromosomes while humans have 23 pairs which is important in dispelling the myth that a union of a sheep ovum and a human sperm can lead to a development of a viable life form.”
Till a disproving fact comes up, Dr Mrwebi maintains that the Lady Frere sheep ‘is not… human but a deformed stillborn lamb sired by a sheep and was subsequently infected by a Rift Valley Fever at an early stage of its pregnancy.”
