Anyone who followed the movies of the ’90s that centred on urban-American or urban-Hispanic culture would remember actor Larenz Tate who famously starred in films like ‘Menace II Society’ ‘New Attitude’ and ‘Dead Presidents’.
The 5 feet 7 inches tall winner of both the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture and the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Acting Ensemble for his role in ‘Crash’ has also worked as a voice-over artist. He voiced the main character in the video game ‘187 Ride or Die’.

Early Life and Rise to Fame
Larenz Tate was born to Peggy and Larry Tate on the 8th day of September 1975, in the west side of Chicago, Illinois. He was born the youngest of three boys to his parents.
Up until he was four, Tate and his family lived in Chicago, before they moved to Bell Gardens, California in search of a better life. While in California, Tate’s parents encouraged their children to take up acting. He and his brothers were then enrolled into a drama program at the Inner City Cultural Center.
It has been revealed that the Tate brothers did not take their lessons seriously but was rather interested in meeting girls. It later dawned on them what massive opportunity they were missing when their classmate and friend Malcolm-Jamal Warner was cast in ‘The Cosby Show’ (1984) to play the role of Theo Huxtable. They almost soon after, got their act together with Larenz Tate, in particular, getting the nod for a couple of small roles.
The following year, Tate made his small-screen debut in the Christmas episode of ‘The Twilight Zone’ series. After that, more roles on both TV series and films began to pour in as he completed his high school education at Palmdale High School, graduating in 1993.
Tate first appeared in one episode of ‘Hunter’ (1987), ‘Amen’ (1988), ’21 Jump Street’ (1989), and ‘The Wonder Years’ (1989) before he was cast in his first movie, ‘The Women of Brewster Place’ (1989). A recurring role in the family comedy series ‘Family Matters’ and CBS’ Eddie Murphy-produced sitcom ‘The Royal Family’ followed, before the latter was prematurely brought to an end following the death of Red Foxx.
In 1992, the Hughes Brothers, a collaborative filmmaking set of twins, approached Tate to star as the trigger-happy teenager O-Dog in their debut feature film titled Menace II Society. The film was well received by audiences around the country after its release and in 1994, it was awarded Best Movie at the 1994 MTV Movie Awards.
Tate teamed up with the Hughes brothers again in 1995 for the crime thriller film, ‘Dead Presidents’. He followed it up with ‘The Postman’ (1997), ‘Why Do Fools Fall in Love’ (1998), ‘Biker Boyz’ (2003) opposite Laurence Fishburne, and as music legend Quincy Jones in ‘Ray’ (2004).
Larenz Tate’s recent appearances are in movies ‘Deuces’ and ‘Girls Trip’; they were both released in 2017. Also in the same year, the bloke appeared in ‘Power’, a TV series.
