In the entertainment industry, there are people who have their hands in different pots by juggling careers as actors and writers or directors. Leelee Sobieski’s career in entertainment is one unlike others, as she has established herself as an actress and also as an artist.

Leelee Sobieski began her career as an actress when she was still a child and she did enough work to make her impact known before making her exit from acting. The work she does as an artist came years after she stopped acting.

Leelee Sobieski Comes From A Multi-Ethnic Family

Leelee Sobieski hails from a family that is made up of people with diverse ethnic roots. Elizabeth Salomon, her mother is a film producer and screenwriter who doubles as her manager while her father, Jean Sobieski is a painter who used to work as an actor, just like his daughter. LeeLee’s mother is American but hails from a family of Dutch and Ashkenazi Jews.

On the other hand, her father is a French national who is also of Polish descent. The most notable influence of her father’s ancestry in her life is her fluency in French. The name she bears, Leelee, is derived from Lilliane which is her paternal grandmother’s name while her second name Elsveta is the polish version of her mother’s name Elizabeth.

She Was Discovered In A School’s Cafeteria

Leelee Sobieski had her high school education at Trevor Day school, which is a private school in New York City. One day while she was in the school’s cafeteria, a talent scout saw her, and that marked the beginning of her now burgeoning acting career. The first audition she had was for the 1994 horror film, Interview with the Vampire, the role she auditioned for went to Kristen Dunst. That same year she was cast in Reunion, a movie made for television.

Her next role was in 1995 in another television movie, this time it was the lead role in A Horse for Danny. The first major film role that Leelee was cast in came two years after in the 1997 film Jungle 2 Jungle where she played Karen Kempster, the daughter of Martin Short’s character. This was her debut in a feature film. Leelee Sobieski’s next major performance was in the 1998 Deep Impact.

This was also the first time she would be in a movie that was a hit at the box office as the film made more than $349 million after it had been made on a budget of $75 million. Her performance in this film gave her more recognition and shortly after a good number of casting directors sought her out.

Mainstream Success

A Soldier’s Daughter Never Cries was her next performance that garnered a lot of praise. A critic applauded her physical charm and technical skill as an actress. She was nominated for a Chicago Film Critics award for Most Promising Newcomer and a Young Artist Award for Best Leading Young Actress, none of which she however won.

During the same period, Sobieski was cast to play Joan of Arc in the miniseries, Joan of Arc. Her performance earned her an Emmy, Golden Globe, and Satellite award for best actress, just like the year before she did not win any of the awards. In the following years, she played Tosia Altman in another miniseries, Uprising. This earned her another nomination from the Golden Globe.

Leelee Sobieski was obviously on track to do great things in her career and she started to get cast in more roles. She worked with Stanley Kubrick in 1999, when she was cast to play a very minor role in Eyes Wide Shut. Never Been Kissed Before, Here on Earth, 88 Minutes and Public Enemies, Hercules, The Good Wife are other films and television shows that feature Leelee Sobieski.

Why Did She Stop Acting?

The last time Leelee Sobieski was seen in a movie was in 2016 in The Last Film Festival which was filmed in 2010. After the film, she worked on some other television shows, and in 2012 called it quits with acting. Towards the end of her career, Sobieski had started to appear in much smaller films and play minor characters; by the end of 2012, she was completely done with acting.

When the actress spoke to Us Weekly about her decision to leave acting she mentioned how she wanted to give all her attention to her kids. She was also losing interest in acting as most of the roles she had been cast in required that she do sexual stuff with other people, that was something she did not want to do anymore. Leelee Sobieski has spoken on how it felt that her appearance was for sale and how the sexual acts she performed in films made her feel cheap.

Her Foray Into Painting

Six years after she took a step back from acting, Leelee Sobieski became a fresh face in the New York painting scene. As an artist, she paints, sculpts, and works with Virtual Reality.

Being the child of an artist she had always wanted to go into arts but she had been caught up in the work she was doing as an actress, especially as it helped pay the bills of her family. It was not until she quit that she was able to dedicate as much time as she wanted to her art.
