LeGarrette Blount’s Early Life
His birth name is LeGarrette Montez Blount and his parents are Gary (father) and Barbara (mother) Blount. He was born on December 5, 1988, and they lived in Tampa, Florida. In high school, he was a multi-sport athlete involved in both track and field activities. He was the college football team running back and made the starting lineup for four years with the record as a three-time 1000-yard rusher. Blount achieved a 1000-yard mark in his second year in high school and repeated it the following season. He also took part in athletic events like 100metre race, shot put, long jump and was also a member of the 4 by 100 meters relay squad.
Blount exceeded his 1000 yard mark in subsequent years as a college footballer in East Mississippi Community College, Scooba (a junior college he attended when he was denied scholarship due to poor academic performance) for two seasons and garnered 376 carries for 2,292 yards and 18 rushing touchdowns. He soon established himself as the highest ranked junior college prospect in his sophomore year. Hitting college football limelight, he was soon rushed by interested universities for a football scholarship and finally accepted to play for the University of Oregon’s Ducks in December 2007. He paired with Jeremiah Johnson, another running back and they got on well both on and off the pitch. Both were instrumental to two victories over Washington State Cougars and Oregon State Beavers that season.
LeGarrette Blount’s football career was initially fraught with problems. He clashed with his team coach on several occasions for missing out in compulsory workout sessions which earned him a brief suspension. One issue that almost cost him his playing career was his fallout with a Boise State defender Byron Hout, who he punched after the latter made a provocative statement. Blount was sent off from the game and had another face off with the Boise fans on his way out. A video footage of this incident went viral and Blount was handed a suspension that almost ended his 2009 season despite apologizing later. The suspension ended on October 1st but he did not feature in any game till the last game of the season against rival Oregon State team, the Beavers. Blount came in as a substitute for LaMichael James and scored a 12-yard run. His team won the game with 37-33.
LeGarrette Blount left college and joined the NFL as a free agent with the Tennessee Titans but was later picked by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before the 2010 season kicked off. He was the leading rookie of the season, rushing 1,007 yards. He was loaned to the New England Patriots 3 seasons later, he officially signed with the side in 2014 and contributed immensely to the team’s AFC championship game with an impressive 148 yards and 3 touchdowns. He ran 40 yards and helped his team secure a win against Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX.
He signed a one year deal with Philadelphia Eagles in May 2017 and there, he featured in his second Super Bowl game, scoring 3 touchdowns while running 766 yards. His great form helped the Eagles secure their very first title in a win against his former team – New England Patriots. The game ended 41-33 in favor of the Philadelphia Eagles.
In April 2018, he moved to Detroit to play with the Lions on a one year contract.
