An intriguing and carefree young character, Lisa Bonet is an American actress who rose to fame as a child star. Fans of two of the most popular shows in the world back in the ’80s will most notably recognize Bonet as the outspoken teenager and one of the most memorable kids in the Huxtable clan on NBC’s The Cosby Show, and its spin-off show, A Different World.
Lisa Bonet Age and Early Life
Lisa Bonet was born on November 16, 1967, in San Francisco, California. Her passion for acting began from a young age. She attended Birmingham High School in Van Nuys, California, and later studied acting at Celluloid Actor’s Studio in North Hollywood.
Before her acting career, Bonet first worked as a model making appearances in several commercials and beauty pageants. She landed her first role as Carla in an episode of the TV series St. Elsewhere (1983). The next year, she got her breakout role as Denise Huxtable in the popular sitcom The Cosby Show. For seven seasons, Bonet portrayed the character Denise, the free-spirited and rebellious second child of the Huxtable clan.
Her outstanding performance in the hit sitcom earned her critical acclaim as well as an Emmy Award and a Young Artist Award nomination. From 1987-1988, she took a brief break from the show and then reprised her role as Denise in A Different World, a spin-off of The Cosby Show which focused on her character’s college life.
Meanwhile, in 1987, she portrayed the character Epiphany Proudfoot in the horror movie Angel Heart where she featured in explicit scenes. The movie won her the Young Artist Award for Best Young Female Superstar in Motion Pictures and a Saturn Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. In order to help promote the movie, Bonet also posed topless for Interview magazine. During this period, she was regarded as a rebel and was at loggerheads with her boss Bill Cosby. After the first season of A Different World, she was eventually fired from the series because of ‘creative differences’. It is rumored that her exit from the series was partly due to her nude sex role with Mickey Rourke in Angel Heart which was contrary to Cosby’s wishes.
Some of her other notable small-screen works include her role as Justine in the series Tales from the Darkside (1985), as Carrie in ABC Afterschool Special (1985), the character Maya Daniels in the drama series Life on Mars (2008 to 2009) and as Mary Ellen in Drunk History (2013). Also, she played a Native American lawyer in The Red Road (2014), and Marisol Campos in Ray Donovan (2016), among others.
Bonet has other big-screen flicks to her credit such as her role as Priscilla in 1993’s Bank Robber, she played Catherine Briggs in the crime-thriller Final Combination (1994), the supporting role of Rachel Banks in the 1998 hit movie Enemy of the State, featured as Heather Lelache in Lathe of Heaven (2002), played Queenie in Biker Boyz (2003), as Magdalena in Road to Paloma (2014), she also played Mae Evans in Whitepaddy (2006) and much more.
