Lori Stokes was born on 16th September 1962 in Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A. to Louis Stokes, an American politician and attorney, and his wife, Jay Stokes. Although information about Lori’s early life is still under wraps, she revealed in one of her interviews that news reporting had always been of interest to her right from childhood.
Lori grew up in Washington, D.C. On completing her high school education, she enrolled at Ohio State University. She, however, did not complete her program, and later joined Howard University where she finally earned her degree. During her university days, Stokes was a smart and intelligent student, showing a keen interest in her childhood dream – a career in journalism.
Journalism Career
In 1986, Stokes started her journalism career as a medical reporter and weekend co-anchor at the Illinois-based network, WCIA located precisely in the Champaign-Urbana area. Two years later, she joined WBTV in Charlotte, North Carolina as a reporter and weekend anchor. This position earned her much popularity among state viewers within a space of two years.
Stokes subsequently took up a crime and street reporting job with WBFF television, an affiliate of Fox located in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1992, she became a full-time anchor as well as the lead female reporter at WJLA-TV’s 6 p.m and 11 p.m newscast, maintaining the position till 1996.
At the wake of MSNBC creation, Stokes joined the NBC News’ TV network. On joining MSNBC, she became the first African-American to host the 24-hour cable news channel.
