Malawi's President Mutharika Launches War On Albino Hunters

President Peter Mutharika has declared a war on Albino hunters whom he called terrorists.

He made this statement during his address on International Albinism awareness day. He added that all those who attack Albino citizens will be brought to book.

Malawi has been plagued with the case of Albino hunters– the name given to some misguided citizens who have been led to believe that using people with albinism for rituals will bring them money and influence.

Mutharika said there have been over 130 kidnaps of albinos by these so-called albino hunters.

The president seemed fed up with the atrocity, citing his embarrassment that Malawi has become known for the prevailing albino hunting.

“People elsewhere are taking us as fools, they think we are ignorant, this is embarrassing… it is sinful,” he said.

“The people who are telling people that it makes people rich are not even rich. They are wearing rags. How can a person like this make your rich if he himself cannot make himself rich?” he said.

The president isn’t the only one who is fed up with the prevalent kidnap of albinos. When a life sentence was given to an albino killer on Wednesday, Malawians erupted with joy.

“This is very important development. This is what we were asking for, this is what we included in the petition we presented to parliament,” Overton Kondowe from the Association of People with Albinism said.

“Next, we want the police to speed up investigations of all abductions and killing of people with albinism so that the cases do not delay.

“We want the state to review all previous cases and make retrials so that stiff penalties such as this one are meted out,” he added

Malawi has not only attempted to bring so-called Albino hunters to book, but the witch-doctors who facilitate the kidnaps of people with albinism.
