Martavis Bryant’s Biography
Martavis Bryant was born to a single mother, Roberta Bryant, on the 20th of December 1991, in Calhoun Falls, South Carolina. His mother worked at a textile manufacturing company to provide for her son who began to show exceptional athletic ability from a very young age.
Bryant was a standout athlete in both football and track as he competed for Calhoun Falls High School. In his junior year, he managed 44 receptions for 776 yards and 6 touchdowns before transferring to T. L. Hanna High School where as a senior, he recorded 70 receptions for 722 yards and 11 touchdowns. Despite such outstanding performances, Bryant was deficient academically and therefore had to spend a year at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Virginia in order to improve his grades and get a chance to play college football.
In 2011, Martavis Bryant accepted an offer to attend Clemson University where he got to play alongside a number of future NFL players like Sammy Watkins and DeAndre Hopkins. In his freshman season, Bryant managed 2 starts from 14 games as he recorded 9 receptions for 220 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns to help his team win the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship.
Bryant showed good improvement in the following year as he recorded 10 receptions for 305 receiving yards and 4 touchdowns. The progression carried on into his junior year where he recorded 42 receptions for 828 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns. Those stats looked to have assured him a place in the NFL so he opted not to return for a senior year and declared for the 2014 NFL Draft where he was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the 118th overall pick.
NFL Career Stats
In his rookie season, despite spending the first six weeks inactive, Martavis Bryant was able to manage 26 receptions for 549 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns. His yards per reception rate was further ranked first among NFL wide receivers and that put him on the radar of football enthusiasts going into the following season.
He, however, found himself suspended by the league for the first four games of the 2015 season. When he was able to return to play, the wide reciever found form as he managed a number of single game career-high stats. During this time, he also notably scored the infamous touchdown that was later deemed to not be a catch where he made a front flip to maintain control of the ball as he caught the pass from Ben Roethlisberger. By the end of the season, Bryant recorded 50 receptions for 765 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns.
Martavis Bryant missed the whole of the 2016 season through suspension but was, however, reinstated in 2017 where he recorded 50 receptions for 603 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns. In 2018, the Steelers traded Bryant to the Oakland Raiders who signed him to a one year deal.
Why Was He Suspended?
Martavis Bryant was suspended by the NFL on two occasions; first for a few games in 2015 and a second time for the whole of the 2016 season, after he violated the league’s substance abuse policy.
