August 54, 1982, saw the birth of Martha Elba Higareda Cervantes, in Villahermosa, Tobasco, Mexico. She was welcomed by an actress mother Martha Cervantes and artist and therapist father Jose Luis Higareda. There is a clear indication that she took after her mum’s name and passion and was born into a family where artistry runs through their veins because her sister, Miriam Higareda, is also an actress.
Martha’s journey into the movie industry started at an early stage when she took up acting at the stage level, wooing audiences, along with dancing jazz, flamenco, tap, and folklore. In her quest to spread her tentacles and garner more experiences, at age fourteen, she left her local setting where she grew up and moved to Mexico City where she made appearances in theatre plays like Little Women and Don Juan.
She enrolled at El Tecnologico de Monterrey College when she was just 15 and majored in Communications, but later changed her course of study to Performing Arts. Her sheer determination for success saw her go to school in the mornings, come back to attend acting school in the evenings while performing in theatre at weekends to build her career and make ends meet. One year later, after she had settled in the city, she would have her mother and sister join her in the city and attend acting school with her.
When she had garnered little experience and exposure from her theatre and acting school, she made her first television appearance as an anchor in Disney Channels program titled Zapping Zone. Her major movie breakthrough would have been Y Tu Mama Tambien, but she had to be removed because she was underage and there were nude scenes that needed to be portrayed in the film.
In 2002, her big payday came as she landed a leading role in a movie directed by Fernando Sarinana and titled Amarte Duele, starring alongside Luis Fernando Pena and Alfonso Herrera. The movie which was widely received became a box office hit and would set her acting career rolling and christened her the ‘Mexican Sweetheart’. Her impressive role as the female lead in the movie earned her a Silver Goddess award as well as an MTV Movies Favourite Actress award.
Since her debut film, she has been at the top of her game. In 2003, she was a lead actor in a Mexican TV show titled Enamorate on TV Azteca. The year 2006 saw her feature in an award-winning film titled Sexo, Amor Y Otras Perversions, where she starred alongside Martha Cristiana, Fernando Sarfati, and Amara Villafuerte. The role she played in the movie earned her another Silver Goddess Award. Another film she starred in the same year was titled Fuera del Cielo which earned her a nomination as the Best supporting actress at the Mexican Academy awards.
The year 2007 was a better year for the Mexican actress as she featured in a film titled Ninas Mal – produced by Columbia Pictures and directed by Fernando Sarinana. The same year, she featured in her debut American movie titled Borderland.
At the time the movie was being screened in Film Market, she met with Graig Shapiro who would advise her to move to Los Angeles. She heeded to the advice and the following year, 2008, she found her way to Hollywood where she auditioned and studied script writing and would feature in a movie directed by David Ayer, titled Street Kings, starring alongside Keanu Reeves and Forest Whitaker.
When Martha Higareda had garnered much experience in the United States, she moved back to Mexico but not without her three finished scripts. When she turned 25, she produced her first independent film titled Te Presento a Laura, in which she played a lead role in the film as Laura. The film was widely received as it made it to the top ten films in the box office 10 straight weeks. It was a dream come through for Martha Higareda as she had always wanted to be a filmmaker.
