Who Is Max Holloway?
Max Holloway was born—Jerome Max Kelii Holloway—in Honolulu, Hawaii, United States, on December 4, 1991, to parents, of Native Hawaiian, English and Samoan origin. Although there are no details about his childhood, early education, siblings, parents or what they do for a living, we know he attended Waianae High School from where he graduated back in 2010 – and it was in high school that Max Holloway began the earliest steps into professional martial artistry which he began by learning kickboxing. He now trains other fighters out of Gracie Technics Honolulu and Legacy Muay Thai. More so, the Hawaii-born gets his strength training out of Tactical Strength and Conditioning under Darin Yap.
He graduated from the academy in 2010 at the age of 19 and with an unbeaten record having won four of his fights and lost none. Two years later, on February 4, 2012, he became the youngest fighter on the UFC roster. He was an injury replacement for Ricardo Lamas against Dustin Poirier. Understandably, he lost the fight via submission just minutes into the first round. However, his second fight with Pat Schilling four months later on June 2012, went down with a victory for the young fighter. In the months that followed, he fought and won against Justin Lawrence and Leonard Garcia.
That year, he was ranked 7th featherweight prospect in Bloody Elbow’s 2012 World MMA Scouting Report. 2013 wasn’t a great year for Holloway as he lost in two fights against Dennis Bermudez and Conor McGregor in May and August respectively. The following year, Max Holloway fought and won against Will Chope, Andre Fili, Clay Collard, Akira Corassani, winning him his first Performance of the Night bonus award.
In the years the followed, Max Holloway faced Cole Miller, Cub Swanson, Charles Oliveira, Jeremy Stephens. In 2015, he became the youngest fighter in UFC history to get 10 wins. He also faced Ricardo Lamas, Anthony Pettis, the featherweight champion José Aldo (whom he defeated via a Total Knockout) and retained the UFC Featherweight belt. 2018 was a tumultuous year for the young champion as he was restrained from important matches due to a leg injury and concussion-like symptoms.
He wasn’t even fit to defend his UFC Featherweight Championship title on July 7, 2018. However, in December of that year, he faced and won against Brian Ortega in the main event at UFC 231 in Toronto, Canada. By that victory, Holloway broke the record for most significant strikes in one fight with 290, and another record for most victories in UFC featherweight history with fifteen.
In April of 2019, Max Holloway faced Dustin Poirier but lost the fight via unanimous decision. Nevertheless, he clinched the Fight of the Night award. He also won about against Frankie Edgar via unanimous decision. And successfully defended his featherweight title for the third time. Due to his aptitude in incorporating a wide display of flying and spinning kicks, knees, and elbows into his striking game, analysts have compared Holloway to former UFC and former WEC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis.
