Maynard James Keenan also known as MJK is an American musician, singer, and songwriter. He owes a good part of his success to a singular decision his parents made.
The musician and rock star is not just a singer, Maynard James Keenan also has a thing for wines. He is a seasoned winemaker and taster famed for having about 1000 bottles of wine in his house.

He also ventured into acting and of course, has featured in some movies he received credit for. Let’s find out the numerous hurdles this Rock Star had to jump before he arrived at stardom, and how he’s handled life since.

Maynard James Keenan’s Bio and Age

Maynard James Keenan, whose real name is Maynard Herbert Keenan, was born in Ravenna, Ohio, on April 17, 1964. His late mother, Judith Marie (died on June 18, 2003), and his father, Michael Loren Keenan, didn’t have any other children hence, Maynard James is their only child.

His parents severed ties in 1968 and this affected his relationship with his father, whom he saw just once a year, for twelve years. Moreover, the man his mother got remarried to made things very unbearable for him and hampered his mental and psychological growth. This made his mother suggest he relocate to Scottville, Michigan (where his father moved to after the divorce) to stay with him after she was diagnosed with Cerebral aneurysm in 1976.

Maynard did not think twice to embrace the option. His father, being a high school teacher got him enrolled in County Central High School, Scottville. There, he joined the wrestling team, which his father also happens to be one of the coaches. He finished from the school in 1982, the same year his father left the coaching job.

Maynard James Keenan attended Kendall College of Arts and Design, Michigan where he met people like Gillian Anderson the now famous actress. After college, he got enlisted in the army; he joined The Marine Corps where he was assigned Forward Observer. One of the reasons he joined the army was to see if he’ll be funded through art school by the G. I Bill. His dreams were met when he was shortlisted to join West Point Prep School, a military preparatory school. While in school, he excelled in different subjects like mathematics, English, wrestling, and sports. He was also outstanding in basic and advanced training which made the school to offer him an appointment which he rejected to pursue his music career. It was while there that he chose the name ‘Maynard’ for himself.
