MC Lyte is an American rapper and one of the greatest female Emcees that the world has ever seen. She is the first female rapper to release a full-length solo album, a feat that she accomplished in 1988 with her hugely successful album Lyte as a Rock. She is also the first female MC to be nominated for a Grammy award. MC Lyte is simply a trailblazer as far as women in rap music are concerned. Get to know more about the matriarch of hip-hop here; including her bio, music career, personal relationships, etc.

MC Lyte Bio

MC Lyte was born on the 11th of October 1970 in Brooklyn, New York. Not much is known about her biological dad but we do know that her mother’s name is Constance. She, however, grew up with the family of hip-hop duo, Audio Two (comprising of Milk Dee and Gizmo) and started rapping as early as 12.

The Brooklyn native released her first single in 1986 at the age of 16. The single I Cram to Understand U examined the negative impact of drug addiction on relationships and was released under the label of First Priority Music, a record label that was started by Nat Robinson – Milk Dee and Gizmo’s father.

MC Lyte released her very first album, Lyte as a Rock, in 1988. The album had such hits songs like Paper Thin, Don’t Cry Big Girls, Lyte as a Rock, 10% Dis, I am a Woman and MC Lyte Likes Swingin. The album remains one of hip-hop’s foundational albums and was named amongst the top 100 greatest rap albums of all time by Source Magazine. With the album, MC Lyte began a tradition of challenging the status quo in an industry that was hitherto dominated by men, standing against the misogynism and sexism in the hip-hop industry.

MC Lyte released her second album Eyes on This in 1989. The album was even more successful than her first proving that Lyte was no fluke. It spurned such hits as Cha Cha Cha which spent 18 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot Rap Singles chart. Lyte went on to release six more albums: Act Like You Know (1991), Ain’t No Other (1993), Bad As I Wanna Be (1996), Seven & Seven (1998), Da Underground Heat, Vol. 1 (2003), and Legend (2015). Her 3rd studio album, Ain’t No Other had the monster hit Ruffneck which earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Single and turned out to be the first gold single ever achieved by a female rap artist. In addition to her own albums, MC Lyte also collaborated with other artists from time to time. One of her most popular collabos is the Soul Train Award-winning “Keep on Keepin’ On” which she did with Atlanta’s Xscape. The track appeared on the soundtrack of Sunset Park in 1996 and became Lyte’s second gold single.

Her Legacy

MC Lyte is one of Hip-hop’s earliest, most committed, and most consistent advocates. She relied on her intelligence and lyrical dexterity to sell her music rather than her looks or her body. She lyrically held her own in an industry dominated by men, making her a force to be reckoned with. Lyte broke the mold and paved the way for the female MCs we love today including the likes of Missy Elliot and Nicki Minaj. She also played a major role in establishing the foundation of the Brooklyn hip-hop scene from which the likes of Biggie Smalls and Jay Z emerged.

In recognition of her contributions, MC Lyte has received several awards. She is the first woman to have been inducted into the VH-1’s Hip-hop Honours (2006) and the first woman to receive BET’s “I Am Hip Hop” Icon Lifetime Achievement Award (2013). She was also the first African-American Woman to become president of the LA chapter of the Grammy Organisation, a post she held from 2011 to 2013.

What’s Her Net Worth?

Apart from her music, MC Lyte is also an entrepreneur as well as activist and philanthropist. She has lectured against violence at several institutions and also founded the Hip-Hop Sisters Foundation. The foundation supports college students with scholarships worth thousands of dollars each year.

MC Lyte is reportedly worth about $8,000,000. Her source of income is not only her music but also comes from her acting. She has featured in several TV shows such as Moesha, Cousin Skeeter, New York Undercover, My Wife and Kids, In the House, Get Real, as well as movies such as A Luv Tale (1999), Train Ride (2000), and Civil Brand (2002).
