Sonny was born to Ralph Hubert Barger (the senior) and Kathryn Camella (nee Ritch) in Modesto, California on October 8, 1938. His father was a laborer at the docks in Oakland. His mother abandoned him when he was just 4 months old, and it took the intervention of his grandmother – who was a Pentecostal Christian to raise him and his older sister, Shirley, as his father was of no good use to them then as he was an incurable alcoholic.
Sonny was always in trouble throughout his schooling days as he was always suspended for either fighting with other boys at school, or for assaulting his teachers. He would eventually drop out of school and work in a grocery store for a while before enlisting in the United States Army.
After his honorable discharge from the Army, he was instrumental in forming the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club, Oakland, California chapter in 1957. He also played a very key role in uniting all the various Hells Angels chapters all over the country, before incorporating the club in 1966. in fact, he was regarded as the international president of the club by many, but he vehemently denied being that.
Sonny Barger was married three times before he eventually got married to Zorana Barger in 2005. His marriage to his first wife, Elsie May, ended with her death in 1967. His second marriage to former beauty queen, Sharon Gruhike, and third marriage to ex-wife Noel, all ended in divorce. Zorana Barger was his fourth and final wife.
Sonny’s health came under the first attack when he was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1983, due to his excessive smoking. Fortunately, he overcame this challenge but had to have his vocal cords removed, he overcame this challenge also by learning to vocalize his words through muscles in his esophagus.
In 2012, he was again diagnosed with prostate cancer and he had to have his prostate removed during the process. His last fight with cancer was when he was diagnosed with liver cancer, and after battling this for several years he passed away peacefully on June 25, 2022, with Zorana by his side.
