The multi-talented Melanie Collins has done a great job over the years and established herself as one of the most brilliant sports journalists. She also plies her trade as a reporter and TV host in the United States. With her wealth of experience spanning over a decade, the outstanding journalist has worked with several mainstream media networks and has been lauded for her excellent performances.
Currently associated with the CBS network, Melanie has gained expertise in both sports and entertainment aspects of journalism. Her job description has exposed her to a lot of opportunities and she has also met many renowned athletes in the course of it. This latter fact has rubbed off on her love life as she has mostly dated pro athletes so far.
Melanie Collins Was Born Into A Family Of Sports Lovers
On the 6th of February 1986, in Pennsylvania, Melanie Collins was born. After her birth, she spent a few years in Pennsylvania before going on to live in places such as Nashville, Chicago, and San Jose. The journalist is Caucasian, as well as an American national. She has two siblings; older brother, Christian, and a younger brother, Kurtis. Her parents, Nancy and Doug, are divorced but still residents in the State College Area.
Melanie Collins’ interest in sports was practically influenced by her family members who are all big-time sports lovers. For instance, her father, Doug, once served as an assistant women’s tennis coach at Penn State University while her mom and stepdad reportedly donated the sum of $1 million towards the construction of the new Pegula Ice Arena at Penn State.
On their own part, brothers, Kurt and Christian, are quite skilled in the game of ice hockey. They played all throughout their high school days and eventually went on to play college ice hockey at Penn State as well. Given such a background, the young Melanie Collins naturally fell in love with sports. She grew up wanting it to be a part of her future career and in a bid to realize these dreams, earned a degree in communications from Penn State University.
The Several Internships She Did in College
Melanie Collins first started working as a bartender while she was still in college. It was during one of her many shifts that a co-worker informed her about trying out for an on-air job at AccuWeather, which was recruiting at that time. She grabbed the opportunity and today, she has become one of the best journalists out there.
Following her stint with Accuweather, Melanie Collins gained another internship program at WPSU-TV. There, she started off as a baseball and football stats collector before subsequently becoming a co-host on the show, Let’s Talk Sports Nittany Lion’s Fans. While doing that, she simultaneously covered football, basketball, baseball, and volleyball events for her alma mater.
Moving on from WPSU-TV, Collins landed another internship program with the Big Ten Network. She combined the job with her position as a beat reporter and host on the show, Penn State Universe.
Her Stints At The Big Ten Network And Yahoo! Sports
Upon graduation in 2008, Melanie Collins was retained by the BTN as a side-line reporter, covering the football program at Penn State University. She remained in this position for about five years, barring the 2009-2010 season where she covered the NBA for Turner Sports in Atlanta Georgia, during which she effectively covered all aspects of the Nittany Lions program. She also went one step further by helping BTN to launch a college sports network known as Stadium Network (previously Total College Sports).
Given such impressive strides, many TV channels hankered for Melanie Collins to come and join them. She however dedicated herself totally to BTN before deciding that the time for fresh challenges had come. Having reached that decision, Collins joined Yahoo Sports! network in the city of San Jose in 2013. She would spend just a year there but it was a worthwhile one as she got the opportunity to travel all over the world and cover renowned sporting events.
They include the 2014 Winter Olympics in the Russian city of Sochi, the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, the Super Bowl, the World Series, the NFL Draft, as well as the NBA Finals. All these events saw Collins rub shoulders with some of the greatest athletes and coaches in the world but she effectively held her own, firing off hard-hitting questions in interviews.
Accomplishments At The CBS Network
After a whirlwind year with Yahoo! Sports, Melanie Collins made another smart career move by joining CBS sports in 2014. She has been there ever since and has been promoted from covering college football to the NFL itself. She now serves as a sideline reporter and has gotten the chance to interview several of the big names in the league, legends and newbies alike.
Collins is now widely regarded as a role model for several aspiring journalists, especially the female folk. She is however not resting on her laurels and has diversified her resume by moonlighting as a fill-in host on the ESPN show, SportsNation. She also hosts two competition reality TV series on the Golf Channel namely, Big Break (which gives aspiring pro golfers an opportunity to go on tour) and Driver V. Driver (which gives golf club designers the opportunity to win half a million dollars).
The Pennsylvania native is now truly a TV star but she has endured a long twisted road to making it to the top. She, therefore, advises other hopefuls to get as much experience as possible if they want to make it in the industry.
She Dated Ice Hockey Pro, Scottie Upshall
Given her profession, Melanie Collins is often around gorgeous and hunky pro athletes. It, therefore, comes as no surprise that she has dated a few of them, starting with the pro ice hockey player, Scottie Upshall. Scottie is a Canadian ice hockey winger who spent about 17 years as a professional. During this period, he played for teams such as the Nashville Predators, St Louis Blues, Phoenix Coyotes, and Florida Panthers. He later retired in 2020.
Melanie and Upshall met for the first time at a show in 2009 and decided to light up their love flame. They remained together for about four years and rumours later had it that they got engaged. Amidst the rumours, the lovebirds couldn’t uphold what they initially felt for themselves and eventually got separated in 2013.
Melanie Has Found Love Again In The Arms Of Another Ice Hockey Player
In the latter part of the year 2013, Melanie Collins moved on with another ice hockey player, James Neal, whom she met at a show. She and Neal have sustained their relationship for about six years now and the engagement rumours have once more started speculating. This has however not been confirmed but the couple remains very much together. They maintain a low profile but Collins has occasionally flown out to watch some of her man’s games.
Nicknamed the real deal, James Neal is a native of Canada and joined the NFL in 2005. He is a winger and has played for several teams such as the Edmonton Oilers, Dallas Stars, Pittsburgh Penguins, Nashville Predators, and Calgary Flames.
