Many may not have realized this, but Melissa isn’t just an actress paid to deliver funny lines, she is an actual comedian. She started her comedic career performing in stand-up bars around New York.

The actress was born on June 23, 1980, into a Jewish family in New Jersey. She has a  brother named Ben Rauch with whom she grew up. Right from childhood, she started showing her potential as a future acting star, but as a daughter to Jewish parents, formal education was more important. For her education, Melissa attended Marlboro High School in her hometown in New Jersey. Upon her high school graduation, she was convinced of her talent and passion for acting and proceeded to secure a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Marymount Manhattan College in New York City.

Melissa, whose professional comedy days started from college continued performing her acts around New York City. During her time as an active stand-up comedian, she performed a one-woman show about the social life of the daughter of former US President, George W. Bush. She titled the show The Miss Education of Jenna Bush.

Rauch’s onscreen career took off in the VH1’s Best Week Ever comedy television show. However, she burst onto the limelight in 2009 with the role she would become famous for, Bernadette Rostenkowski in The Big Bang Theory. She was originally supposed to make a couple of guest appearances during the third season of the show but the fans loved her character and she became a permanent feature of the show. Since she joined the show, her performances have drawn widespread praise from fans and critics. Following this, Melissa along with her co-stars have been nominated four times for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

While The Big Bang Theory has been her most significant and popular project till date, Melissa has featured in a number of other film and television projects since hitting the limelight. She has featured on projects such as True Blood, the fantasy horror series where she had a recurring role. She’s also featured in The Office. In film, she’s made appearances in live action and animated movies. She appeared in 2009 film, I Love You, Man featuring Paul Rudd and she’s voiced characters in animated movies such as Harley Quinn in Batman and Harley Quinn and Francine in Ice Age: Collision Course.

So far, she has appeared in ten movies and 14 TV shows and also performed on stage. She was part of the comedic stage show The Realest Real Housewives and her only foray into movie production so far was The Bronze which she co-wrote and co-produced. The movie debuted at Sundance Film Festival and was well received by critics. Sony Pictures, the movie studio bought the film in September 2015.

Melissa is married to Winston Rauch, who upon marrying Melissa took the unconventional route and took her name. The couple met at Marymount Manhattan College where they both attended. Winston, who is also a movie writer has worked with his wife on several projects, including Melissa’s one-woman show. They both have a child named Sadie, who was born on December 4, 2017, after they had previously suffered a miscarriage.
