Michael J Fox’s Bio, Age

Michael J Fox was born—Michael Andrew Fox— in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, on June 9, 1961, to the family of William and Phyllis Piper Fox. His father, William worked as a police officer and while his mother was an actress and a payroll clerk in Alberta. We can’t say for sure if William and his four siblings— Kelli, Karen, Jacki, and Steven—grew up in Alberta. Due to his father’s work, the family lived in various towns and cities across Canada. However, when he was 10, the family finally settled in Burnaby, a large suburb of Vancouver, British Columbia. His father had retired from service at the time but sadly passed on on January 6, 1990, due to a heart attack he’d suffered. Fox attended Burnaby Central Secondary School and later moved to Burnaby Central South School.

Growing up, Fox struggled in school and was considered too small to compete in his favorite extracurricular activity, ice hockey. However, he found an outlet in drama class and made his professional acting debut on the CBS series Leo and Me in 1976. He was just 15 then. Three years later, Fox moved to Los Angeles to further his acting career; where he spent the next nine years before moving back to Vancouver after getting married. If you’re still wondering where the “J” in his name comes from, well, that’s a pretty long story.

When Michael J Fox registered with the Screen Actors Guild, which requires unique registration names to avoid credit ambiguities, he soon realized that Michael Fox, a veteran character actor, had already been registered under that name. And so, Fox needed to come up with a different name. The sound of “Michael A. Fox” didn’t go down well with him. Plus, he also didn’t like the sound of “Andrew” or “Andy,” therefore, he adopted a new middle initial, “J.” As he writes in his autobiography, it was a tribute to actor Michael J. Pollard.
