Her place of birth notwithstanding, the actress’s family is Jewish. While her mechanical engineer dad worked as a cab driver, the actress’ mum was employed as a physics teacher and runs a pharmacy. Mila Kunis grew up alongside an older brother Michael. The Kunis family moved to the United States when their daughter was 7 years of age after deciding that there was no future in the Soviet Union for their children.

They reportedly suffered from anti-Semitism in the US because they were Jews among many other reasons. Anti-Semitism had also been part of the reasons why they left the Soviet Union and while there, her parents raised them Jewish as much as they could, even though the Soviet Union suppressed religion.

Just two days after arriving in Los Angeles, the US, Kunis was enrolled at Rosewood Elementary School where she experienced huge culture shock as she could not speak any English and found the people around her to be behaving strangely. The common language within her family is Russian which is also her mother tongue.

While there, she met talent manager Susan Curtis who later managed her career.

Kunis went on to attend Hubert Howe Bancroft Middle School and while filming That ’70s Show, she had to use an on-set tutor for most of her high school years. After she did the auditions, the actress was instructed to speak slower by MacFarlane, who asked to return later and enunciate more.

Kunis was later hired by MacFarlane who described her performance as exceptional. MacFarlane said that the young actress had something very natural about her which she brought into the role.
