NCT Dream, NCT U And NCT 127 Explained

NCT U

NCT U, which is the first NCT subunit to be created, was debuted by SM Entertainment on 9th April 2016. The unit often rotates its members for different reasons based on who fits in best to the concept or style of the songs. They made their debut with the release of a digital single ‘The 7th Sense’ which featured only five members – Taeyong, Ten, Jaehyun, Doyoung, and Mark. They later dropped another single ‘Without You’ which had 3 members – Taeil, Jaehyun, and Doyoung.

On 19th February 2018, the unit released a song titled ‘Boss’ which featured an additional three new members; Jungwoo, WinWin and Lucas. At the moment, the NCT U current line up consists of 10 members – Taeyong, Ten, Doyoung, Kun, Taeil, Jaehyun, WinWin, Jungwoo, Lucas and Mark.

NCT 127

NCT 127 is the second subunit of the South Korean boy group, NCT; it was unveiled on 7th July 2016. With a mission of starting from Seoul and then going International, the unit was specifically given the number 127 which represents the longitudinal coordinate of Seoul. The group is a fixed unit as its members cannot be taken out rather new ones are added. NCT 127 was unveiled as a 7 member group when they dropped their single ‘Firetruck’; the group consisted of Taeyong, Jaehyun, Taeil, Yuta, WinWin, Haechan and Mark.

During their comeback on 4th January 2017, two new members named Johnny and Doyoung (an NCT U member) was added to the group. A few months later, in October, Jungwoo became a member of the unit as he was featured in their full-length album, ‘Regular-irregular’. Presently, NCT 127 has 10 members which include Taeyong, Jaehyun, Taeil, Yuta, WinWin, Haechan, Mark, Johnny, Doyoung and Jungwoo. They are the most popular subunit of NCT and have released hit singles and EPs such as ‘Cherry Bomb’, ‘Limitless’ and ‘NCT #127’, which have peaked at music charts. They have also equally racked up many awards.

NCT Dream

Aside from NCT U and NCT 127, NCT Dream is another subunit of NCT. It is the third unit that was formed by SM Entertainment; they made their debut on 24th August 2016 with the release of a single titled ‘Chewing Gum’. The group, which consists of the youngest seven members of NCT, has a rule which states that once a member turns 19 years old, he will graduate from the unit and join any of the other subunits. In 2018, the NCT Dream members were Mark, Renjun, Jisung, Jeno, Jaemin, Haechan and Chenle.

However, the current group line up doesn’t include Mark who turned 19 in August 2018 and as a result of the group’s rule, he graduated from the unit on 31st December 2018. The group released their first album ‘The First’ alongside the hit single ‘The First and Last’ on February 9, 2018; unfortunately, they did so without Jaemin who was having health complications then. He later joined in their subsequent release which includes ‘Go’, ‘We Go Up’, ‘Fireflies’ and ‘We Boom’.
