Two months after his appearance on the series, David gained media attention following rumors of his relationship with Neil Patrick Harris, which later turned out to be true.
All You Need to Know About Their Love Life
Neil Patrick Harris met David Burtka in the year 2004. At that time, the former was single with no hope of meeting someone while the latter was involved in a long-distance relationship that had him shuttling between New York and Los Angeles but yet, had no future as the distance put a strain on their romance. In the same year, Burtka told Out, they started hanging platonically with other people and had lunch one or two times, but with no strings attached.
Things moved quite fast between the duo as they eventually went on their first official date later in 2004, just one week after David Burtka broke up with his partner. According to an interview the couple had with Out, they went to the movies for their first date and saw Taking Lives, starring Angelina Jolie. Afterward, Harris and Burtka began hanging out every night, and three months after, it became a sort of a routine, Burtka told Out. According to him, they talked on the phone not less than eight times every day and sent each other text messages at least 25 times daily. “We are, in a way, very codependent. He’s my lifeline, in an amazing way. Without him, I can’t breathe,” he added.
In 2005, Harris was cast in How I Met Your Mother and as a result, he moved to Los Angeles for the filming but not without David. Speaking to Architectural Digest, he said he thought the show would be a short chapter but it turned out to be a huge success, and consequently kept them in California for almost 10 years. That notwithstanding, the couple had already decided that as soon as the show was over, they would return to New York and raise their family.
Taking Their Relationship to the Next Level
All the while, neither of the duo had publicly admitted to being gay. However, in 2006, Neil Patrick Harris put an end to all rumors and speculations about his sexuality as he publicly asserted that he was a “content gay man” in an exclusive interview he granted to People magazine. Speaking to the magazine, he said he was happy to dispel any rumors or misconceptions about his sexual orientation, adding that he was proud to describe himself as a very content gay man living his life to the fullest.
Convinced that they were meant to spend the rest of their lives forever, David Burtka proposed to Neil Patrick Harris in 2007 on the street corner where they met for the first time. Narrating how it happened to Out, Harris said that they were going for an event at an Indian casino located 45 minutes out of town. After some time, David wanted to stop their limousine for a reason he did not really understand, and then he went down on one knee and asked him to marry him. “I was so freaked out by it that I said, ‘Yes,’ but I didn’t know what it meant. Then I got the ring and loved it.”
On Valentine’s Day of the following year, Harris popped the question to Burtka in Santa Monica, and of course, he said ‘yes’. The couple kept their engagement very quiet until five years later when the Marriage Equality Act was passed in New York on June 24, 2011. Based on that, they announced their engagement on Twitter stating that they had agreed to marry each other five years earlier but kept it a secret until same-sex marriage was legalized.
Tying the Knot
Harris eventually married his longtime partner, David Burtka, in a wedding ceremony that took place in September 2014 in Perugia, Italy. Sharing the news of their marriage, Harris posted one of their wedding pictures as seen below:

Expanding Their Family
Speaking to Out, Harris revealed that they both wanted to have children. However, it was while they lived in Los Angeles during the filming of How I Met Your Mother, that they both came to the agreement that if they wanted to have children, they were going to have them not so late in the game.
The couple had a set of fraternal twins – a son named Gideon Scott and a daughter named Harper Grace, from a surrogate mother on October 12, 2010. According to Harris, the boy was named after Gideon Rubin, an artist, while the girl was named after American novelist, Harper Lee, writer of one of their favorite books titled “To Kill a Mockingbird”.
Describing the conception of the twins during an interview with Oprah per The Daily Mail, David Burtka said “Two eggs, two embryos, one of mine, one of his.” While Harris and his husband knew their kids’ surrogate mother, the egg donor was found via a donation bank and as such, was anonymous.
