You have most probably heard of the term catfish. You most likely know that it refers to a situation whereby a person creates a false social media profile, complete with fake bio and pictures, in order to trick an unwitting individual into a romance. However, did you know that the term was created by Nev Schulman? Did you also know that he coined the term as a result of his own personal experiences which has since been turned into a popular documentary film? Want to know more about Schulman’s story? Then you are in the right place.
Nev Schulman’s Age and Early Life
Yaniv Schulman was born on the 26th of September 1984 in New York City. The TV host grew up in the Big Apple and fell in love with dance and photography at an early age. He pursued both interests all throughout his formative years and eventually enrolled at the Sarah Lawrence College New York to study both subjects.
Nev Schulman spent three years at Sarah Lawrence before falling into troubled waters. In his junior year in 2006, he attended a coming-out dance for LGBTQ students and was taking pictures of couples who were dancing and kissing. A lesbian student, who felt that he had no right to do so without their permission, confronted him and he ended up punching her.
Schulman later disclosed that he only acted in self-defense and that he thought she was a man. His victim, on the other hand, disclosed that he punched her multiple times. The whole event got Schulman expelled from school and he spent the next few years working as a professional photographer. The young man also got involved with an anti-violence organisation – Leave Out Violence.
What to Know About His Girlfriend and Daughter
Nev Schulman may have once been duped in the name of love but that did not stop him from trying again. The TV host is married to his beautiful and able collaborator, Laura Perlongo. Perlongo is a native of Massachusetts and was born on the 6th of September 1985. She holds a degree in commercial and advertising art, and has since established a career as a copywriter.
So how did Schulman and Perlongo meet? Ironically, the couple first met via Instagram in 2015. Schulman later messaged Perlongo for a dinner date and she agreed. The two subsequently commenced a relationship and eventually got engaged in May 2016. Their nuptials took place on the 22nd of July 2017.
The couple now has two kids together. Their first daughter – Cleo James, was born in May 2016. Their second, son – Beau Bobby Bruce, was born in January 2019. Schulman and his wife co-host a popular Facebook Watch series titled We Need to Talk. The show examines tough relationship problems, especially in the modern-day dating world. The couple also fields questions from viewers and offer their practical wisdom to them.
Who Is His Brother?
Nev Schulman hails from a family of four. It includes his parents (names not available) as well as an elder brother named Ariel. Ariel is a graduate of the Tisch School of Arts and is now a filmmaker and actor. He directed and filmed the 2010 Catfish documentary which launched Schulman’s career. He is also an executive producer on his brother’s TV series Catfish: The TV Show. Asides his work on Catfish, Ariel has directed other movies such as Paranormal Activity 3.
How Rich is Nev Schulman?
Nev Schulman has a net worth of $500,000. This comes from his earnings from his two successful projects; the documentary film – Catfish and the MTV TV series, Catfish: The TV Show. Schulman’s journey to ‘catfish stardom’ started in 2010 when an 8-year old girl, named Abby, sent him a painting she had done of his picture on Facebook. Schulman soon became Facebook friends with not just Abby but also her mom, Angela and her beautiful elder sister, Megan. The media personality eventually commenced an online romance with Megan. In the course of the relationship, Schulman noticed several red flags and became suspicious. He thus decided to visit his Facebook friends in Michigan only to discover an intricately woven web of lies. It turned out that Abby had no artistic talent and that it was her mom, Angela, who made the painting. It also turned out that Megan was not real but was invented by Angela who was running the fake accounts.
The whole experience was later turned into the 2010 documentary film, Catfish. The film was premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and received critical acclaim. It also spurned a follow-up series titled Catfish: The TV Show. Catfish: The TV Show follows Schulman and his crew as they help other online couples discover whether their relationship is built on truth or on a foundation of lies. Most often than not, it turns out that one or even both persons in the relationship are lying. However, there have also been some genuine and heartfelt relationships on the show. Catfish: The TV Show debuted on MTV in 2012. It has since spurned international versions in several Latin American countries.
Nev Schulman is 5 feet 10 inches tall (1.79 m) and his weight is listed as 73 kg or 160 lbs. Other additional measurements, such as arms/biceps, chest and waist size, is not yet available. The Catfish star, however, boasts of natural charismatic looks which have certainly helped to further his TV career.
