Both are like minds who share common values and beliefs. To a large extent, they share similar personality traits- great talkers, brilliant writers, excellent academicians and influencers of social change. However, Obama says it was an “opposites attract” situation when they first met.

How It All Started

The adorable couple met in 1989. Barack was a summer associate at Sidley Austin LLP, in Chicago while Michelle was his advisor. At the time they were among the few African Americans at the Chicago law firm.

After several declines to a date, Michelle finally gave in and the rest of the love story was written. Michelle recalls channeling her focus on her career before Obama came along.

They got engaged in 1991 and were married on October 3, 1992, at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago.

As much as the two are a couple on the pedestal, the couple admits that the journey has not really been all that rosy. They’ve had bumps in their way like every other couple does. They have argued and had to endure the strain of Obama’s political position on their relationship and family at large. However, they kept their values and found a way to keep the ship sailing.

The world will not forget Obama’s Chicago farewell speech where he broke down in tears as he thanked and appreciated his wife for standing by him through the thick and the thin.

“Michelle – for the past 25 years, you’ve been not only my wife and mother of my children but my best friend.  You took on a role you didn’t ask for and made it your own with grace and grit and style and good humor…”

Barack and Michelle are blessed with two daughters- Malia Ann, who was born on July 4, 1998; and Natasha fondly known as “Sasha”, born on June 10, 2001.
