He was also considered to be in the top five choices for the best safety with predictions stating that by the second round of picking in the NFL draft of 2017, he would be chosen by any of the teams.
However, when the draft came around he did not make the cut even in the second round and had to wait a longer time when the Oakland-based Oakland Raiders selected him. His time with the Raiders was short as he got injured on various occasions; one of which required him getting hip surgery, causing him to play for a little amount of time. As a result of his injuries, he was placed on the Raiders injury reserve and was released from the team in 2018.
A month after his release from the Raiders, Obi Melifonwu was picked up by the New England Patriots. In the time he joined the team he has played in just two games, hopefully as time goes by he gets to play in more games and fulfill all the predictions of a great career that was believed he would lead.
