He was born in 1942 into a rather humble family in the village of Ifewara, Osun State in Nigeria. He respectively schooled at Ilesha Grammar School, Ilesha and having discovered a passion for mathematics, went on to study Mathematics in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He also later acquired a Masters (MSc.) Degree in Hydrodynamics and a Doctorate (PhD) in Applied Mathematics from the University of Lagos. All this academic achievements though challenged by finances, academic politics and the Nigerian Civil War, were pursued and attained with a laudable focus and consistence.Pastor Adeboye

Although he rose to national and international prominence after his appointment as the General Overseer of RCCG, Pastor Adeboye’s initial ambition was to become the youngest Vice Chancellor in Nigeria and prior to his call to ministry, he had been well on his way to achieving that ambition as a lecturer in Mathematics at both the University of Lagos and the University of Ilorin. His path had however been redirected when he married his wife; Foluke Adenike Adeboye (nee Adeyokunnu); in 1967 and they both began a quest for more children which saw them seeking spiritual help. They came to RCCG in 1973, met its past G.O Pastor Josiah Oluwafemi Akindayomi and he became born again on 29 July, 1973.

His initial duty in the church was to translate Pastor Akindayomi’s messages from Yoruba to English, he was formally ordained a Pastor in 1975. Showing a spirited dedication to the service of God, he began organizing crusades, outreaches and revivals. Pastor Akindayomi who was impressed by his dedication, chose him as the man to succeed him when he died in 1981. Pastor Adeboye then tirelessly worked to bring the previously unknown church to the international notoriety which it now enjoys with branches in 110 countries all over the world.

Pastor Adeboye has been fingered as one of the richest Pastors in Nigeria and has been awarded a number of honours, some of which include; The Order of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by the Nigerian President in 2008, named one of the 2009 World’s Fifty Most Powerful People by Newsweek Magazine (USA), the Spiritual Pillar of Nigerian Sports (a national sports honor in 2010) and several honorary degrees. He is also greatly beloved by RCCG members around the world and a great number of people besides who recognise how influential this great man has been.
