Vladimir Putin is a Russian politician currently serving as President of the Russian Federation.
Vladimir Putin’s Bio
Putin was born on 7 October 1952 in Leningrad, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union (present-day Saint Petersburg), as Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin. Born into an ordinary family, he was the last of the three children of Maria Ivanovna Putina, a factory worker, and Vladimir Spiridonovich Putin who worked as a security guard and subsequently, as a foreman at the carriage works. Before his birth, Vladimir Putin’s parents had already lost their first two sons, Viktor and Albert, both born in the middle of 1930. While Viktor died of diphtheria during the Second World War, Albert died as an infant.
Meanwhile, at the onset of World War I, Putin’s family (ie his father’s family) were forced to move from St Petersburg to his grandmother’s village, Pominovo, in the Tver Region, as a result of the hardship and hunger that became the order of the day in their former place of abode. It was in Pominovo that Vladmimir Putin’s parents met and married at the age of 17. At the end of the war, the Putins’ moved into a room in a communal apartment, in a typical St Petersburg dwelling house on Baskov Lane.
On 1 September 1960, Putin began his academic journey at School No. 193, Baskov Lane, Leningrad. While there, he described himself as a troublemaker, not a pioneer. After completing his eighth grade in 1968, Putin continued to Saint Petersburg High School 281, where he studied German, completing his studies there in 1970.
Vladimir Putin already knew that he wanted to work in intelligence even before he was done with high school and was determined to make it a reality. He, therefore, went to a public reception office of the KGB Directorate to find out how to become an intelligence officer. The resultant information he gathered there prompted him to enroll at the law department at Leningrad State University later in 1970, from where he earned his degree in 1975.
Upon graduation from the higher institution, Putin began his career in the state security agencies having trained at the 401st KGB school in Okhta, Leningrad. At the beginning of his job in 1975, Putin’s first appointment was to the Directorate secretariat, then the counterintelligence division where he worked for about five months. He was subsequently sent to Moscow for a one-year special training. When he came back to Leningrad, Putin worked in the First Main Directorate – the intelligence service- for about four years and six months before he returned again to Moscow to study at the Andropov Red Banner Institute, where he received training in preparation for his trip to Germany.
Between 1985-1990 Vladimir Putin worked the local intelligence office in Dresden, East Germany. Within his service years, he was promoted twice, first to the position of lieutenant colonel and later to senior assistant to the head of the department. When he returned to Leningrad from Dresden in 1990, he took up a new job at Leningrad State University as the assistant to the rector (in charge of international relations). Soon afterward, he was made an adviser to the chairman of the Leningrad City Council. The following year (1991), he became the Chairman of the Committee for International Relations at the St Petersburg City Hall, and held the position from 1994 alongside the post of Deputy Chairman of the St Petersburg City Government.
Having a lot on his plate, Vladimir Putin sent in his resignation from the KGB after he started working at the City Hall.
Putin’s Political Journey
Vladimir relocated to Russia’s capital- Moscow- with his family in 1996 following an offer to become the Deputy Chief of the Presidential Property Management Directorate. This marked the beginning of his rapid rise in the political circle.

His Net Worth
It was unbelievable when Muammar Gaddafi was estimated to be worth $400 billion. Putin’s net worth may be taking a similar shape.
Several business reports have strongly suggested that the Kremlin boss could be actually the world’s richest man with a deafening sum of $200 billion.
in July 2017, Jeff Bezos, Amazon boss briefly surpassed Bill Gates with a total of $92 billion. Thanks to the hike in Amazon’s share price.
At the moment the 2 world richest billionaires are still contending at the $90 billion net worth.
Making the battle of the richest more interesting is the recent supposition by Bill Browder that both tech-billionaires may have to labor for more years to meet up with the worth of Vladimir Putin.
According to the report, Bill Browder, a US financier bluntly suggested that Russian President, Vladimir Putin is richer than the joint net worth of Mr. Bezos and Mr. Gates.
Bill Browder, CEO of Hermitage Capital Management says Putin’s net worth is an estimated $200 billion. He made this known during the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday, July 27, 2017, saying, “I believe he is worth $200 billion”.
In 2008, Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky uncovered a tax fraud that implicated Russian officials worth $230 million. The lawyer was soon incarcerated until his death in prison.
Officially, President Putin is entitled to a $133,000 annual earning.
In the actual sense, Browder is of the view that Putin secretly makes money off Russia’s dubious Oligarchs.
He explains it thus: “Putin was originally fighting with the oligarchs when he first came to power. One by one by one after Mikhail Khodorkovsky was convicted, these other oligarchs went to Vladimir Putin and said, ‘What do we have to do to not sit in that cage?’ He said very straightforward—’50 percent.’ Not 50 percent for the Russian government or 50 percent for the presidential administration of Russia, 50 percent for Vladimir Putin,”
In other words, these oligarchs bribe Putin with about 50% of their business deals. Browder says “they hold his money for him.”
He also suggests that he may have hidden investments in the United States.
It is worthy to mention that Putin’s net worth has not always been open for accurate estimation.
Relationship- Married, Wife, Girlfriend
Vladimir Putin was once married but is currently divorced. He met his former wife, Lyudmila Putina, through a mutual friend. At the time, she was working as a flight attendant for PJSC Aeroflot, also known as Russian Airlines. Three years after they first met, Vladimir proposed to Lyudmila and on 28 July 1983, the lovebirds tied the knot in a wedding ceremony. The couple got married when Putin was 30 years and Lyudmila, 25.
However, 30 years later, precisely on 6 June 2013, Putin made an announcement revealing that their marriage was over. On 1 April the next year, he confirmed that the divorce had been finalized.
Since his divorce from his wife, the Russian President has been linked to different women. The latest of them is Alina Kabaeva, a retired Russian gymnast who according to rumours, has been romantically involved with Putin since 2008 when he was still married.
Even though Mr. Putin has constantly denied that the Olympic gold medalist was his secret lover, speculations about their relationship have persisted. It has also been reported that the couple has children together.
Alina Kabaeva, nicknamed “Russia’s First Mistress”, has also denied being the Russian president’s secret partner but it has not helped matters as she deliberately refuses to mention the name of her mystery partner in interviews.
Alina was seen in February 2017, wearing what appeared to be a silver band on her wedding finger. But no one knows for certain if it means that she is secretly married to Putin.
Vladimir and Lyudmila Putin had two children together within the period they were married. Before their departure for Germany, the couple gave birth to their first daughter, Maria Putina, on 28 April 1985 in Leningrad. The following year, on 31 August, Yekaterina Putina, their second daughter, was born in Dresden, East Germany. The two sisters were named after their grandmothers- Maria Putina and Yekaterina Shkrebneva.
Despite being members of the first family in Russia, the identity of Putin’s two daughters, who are now grownups, have been shielded from the media. In fact, there has been some argument about their real names.
The media in their usual fashion, however, would never be willing to let the ladies remain a secret forever and as a result, have gone ‘digging’. Following the information hunt, a supposed picture of Maria emerged in 2016, reportedly her first picture since her father came to power in 1999. In addition to the pictures, claims arose that the Moscow-University medical student lived a high-flying life with Jorrit Faassen, her Dutch husband.
On the other hand, media discovery claims that the younger daughter, Katerina, said to be married to Russian billionaire Kirill Shamalov, is a successful acrobatic rock ‘n’ roll dancer. She, according to reports, has always gone by the surname of her maternal grandmother, Tikhonova, in a bid to guard her anonymity better.
President Putin measures 5 feet 6 inches tall (168cm, 1.68m). He also weighs 71kg (152lbs), has dark brown eyes and light brown hair.
