An actress whose name became suggestive of fun and strength since the 1980’s, Queen Latifah is known as one of the most multi-talented actresses and Hollywood boss-lady of all time. She took over the industry as a musician and actress immediately after starting out and has continued to power on with many amazing albums and films to her credit.

The beautiful Academy-Award nominated star has also followed this up with several other projects and endorsements such as being a celebrity spokesperson for Pizza Hut and Jenny Craig, CoverGirl cosmetics, etc. In addition, she has launched her own line of cosmetics called CoverGirl Queen Collections and is ready to put new engagements on her table at any chance that comes her way.

Biography

Her given name is Dana Elaine Owen but she prefers to go by Queen Latifah, which in the Arabic language means “delicate and very kind”. Latifah was born on March 18, 1970, in New Jersey.

She spent the early days of her childhood in the care of her mother Rita, an Irvington High School teacher, and father Lancelot Owen, a police officer. However, trouble rocked her parents’ marriage and later led to their official separation when she was just ten. The actress schooled in a Catholic School although she grew up a Baptist. She had her high school education at Essex Catholic Girls’ High School and after a while there, she transferred to a public school Irvington High School where she completed her high school education.

Early Career

Queen Latifah’s interest flickered a bit between sports and singing while growing up. She played basketball (as a power forward) in school and performed in her school’s musical The Wiz. Apparently, she dropped sports entirely after school and started her music career in 1988, beatboxing for Ladies Fresh, a hip-hop group. Her chance came when her demo recordings by DJ King Gemini got noticed by Dante Ross, a famous hip-hop industry executive who signed her to Tommy Boy Records. By the time she dropped her single Wrath of My Madness, her career took a significant turn. In 1989, the then nineteen-year-old Latifah released her first album All Hail Queen Latifah which earned her a Candace Award from National Coalition of 100 Black Women and heavy prominence in the industry. Her speed of excellence caused Queen to spend more time at the studio and by 1998, she was already done with her fourth banger Order in the Court.

The outspoken rapper felt she had not yet convinced the audience that she was more than a rapper. For her next music, she deviated from rap to start singing soul and Jazz, releasing more albums in these genres of music from 1989 to 2007 and in 2009, she teamed with NJPAC jubilation choir to record the hit track Oh Happy Day: An All-Star Music Celebration.

Film Career

Throughout the years she was making waves in the music industry, Latifah was equally scoring successes in acting. She made numerous small TV appearances and one of them was in FOX sitcom Living Single.

In 1996, she solidified the fact that she had come to shine with a role in the massively renowned box office film Set It Off. She received major acclaim for the role and it won her more chances to showcase her talent in Living Out Loud and Bone Collector. Her mainstream success came in 2002 with a role in Chicago as Matron Mama Morton. The TV producer has since maintained her prolific image with more than 50 films since the 2000s.

Queen Latifah is not known to have been married to any person of any gender. But this may not mean she doesn’t hope to have her own family someday. As a matter of fact, she once mentioned in an interview that she was hoping to start a family.

When it comes to dating, the fearless actress has allegedly done it with both sexes. However, her loved-up moments with fellow women have always made more waves.

Some of the girls she has allegedly dated include Choreographer Eboni Nichols and her personal trainer Jeanette Jenkins.

She and Jeanette reportedly dated for five years and were engaged to be married. Those days, they were caught in a series of photos, sharing romantic moments. Although none of them has ever opened up about this affair, Latifah and Jenkins, founder of Hollywood fitness company also attended events together and even bought a home together in 2010. When the relationship seemed over, Latifah found a shoulder to lean on in Eboni. Likewise, they were always spotted around together but the duo also parted ways in 2015, according to sources. It is not known who she is seeing currently, nonetheless, she was recently spotted with Jenkins. Perhaps they’re trying to patch things up once again.
