The entire family packed up their things in a single suitcase and armed with only $20, left Yugoslavia. The Herjavec family initially moved to Italy before migrating to Halifax, Canada. They eventually settled down in a small suburb in Toronto. For the first 18 months, Herjavec and his family resided in the basement of a family friend. His father later got a job and the family’s fortunes slowly improved. Robert Herjavec recommenced his education and even though he spoke no English at first, he still did well in school.
