Rupert Murdoch’s Biography

The prominent media tycoon was born, Keith Rupert Murdoch on 11th March 1931 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. He is one of the four children born to Dame Elizabeth Greene and Sir Keith Murdoch with the names of his other siblings as follows; Anne Kantor, Janet Calvert-Jones and Helen Handbury. Rupert Murdoch completed his high school in 1949 from Geelong Grammar School, Geelong, Victoria, Australia. While in high school, he was the associate editor of the school’s magazine, The Corian and the editor of the student magazine, If Revived.

He also guided their cricket team to the National Junior Finals. At the same time, he was tutored by his father on how to take over their publishing business, working as part-time at the Melbourne Herald. He then headed to Oxford, England for higher education and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics from Worcester College, Oxford, England. During his time in college, Murdoch handled Oxford Student Publications Limited, the publishing house of Cherwell and was a fellow of the Oxford University Labour Party.

Following the death of his father in 1952, Murdoch came back to Australia and took over his father’s publishing business. He took the business to a whole new level, acquiring a number of newspapers in Australia and New Zealand which includes Perth Sunday Times, Sydney’s The Daily Mirror and New Zealand The Dominion. He expanded and restructured his business by adopting tabloid form newspapers, with emphasis on scandals, sex, sports, and eye-catching headlines and with that his business blossomed and turned into widely read papers.

Soon after the purchases, the media titan spread his tentacles to the UK in 1969 and acquired the ownership of News of the World and The Sun newspapers before moving to America in 1973 to continue his publishing business by buying ExpressNews in San Antonio. In addition, Rupert Murdoch ventured into media broadcasting by establishing News Corporation which later incorporated his many media outlets including Twentieth Century Fox, The World Street Journal, HarperCollins and many others. The union produced a child, Prudence in 1958 before hitting the rocks in 1967. Almost soon after, he walked down the aisle with Anna Maria Torv in 1967 and the union produced three children; Elizabeth born on 22nd August 1968, Lachlan born on 8th September 1971 and James born on 13th December 1972. Unfortunately, they separated in June 1999 with Anna receiving assets worth $1.2 billion as her alimony.

Seventeen days later, Murdoch married his third wife, Wendi Deng on 25th June 1999. The union was blessed with two children; Grace and Chloe. His first son, Lachlan who was the former Deputy Chief Operating Officer at the News Corps., and the publisher of the New York Post resigned from his executive positions at the end of July 2005 and only agreed to remain a board member of News Corps.
