Sabrina Dhowre is an American/Canadian model of African descent. She received worldwide popularity in early 2018 when renowned British actor Idris Elba proposed to her. The two had met in Vancouver, Canada while Elba was filming the thriller movie, The Mountain Between Us, alongside Kate Winslet.

Now man and wife, Sabrina Dhowre co-frontiers several humanitarian causes with her husband, including being Goodwill Ambassadors for the UN’s International Fund for Agricultural Development. But there is more to know about Dhowre than her just being Idris Elba’s wife.

Sabrina Dhowre was Born in New York But Grew Up in Montreal

Although Sabrina Dhowre was born on July 16, 1989, in New York, United States, she spent the better part of her early life in Montreal, Canada. With her mom Maryam Egal being Somali, Sabrina lays claim to her origins being in the horn of Africa, identifying as Somalian-American. So far, she has not revealed much about herself, her family, or her early life and educational background. Asides from earning a college degree in English Literature from Howard University and her life as a supermodel, there are hardly any details about her distant past.

In October 2020, she reportedly talked the Canadian government into pledging £3.5 million to a UN Covid fund for struggling African farmers hit by Covid-19. The call came after an engaging Zoom session with Canadian ministers.

Together with her husband, she has also extended her tentacles into activism. In December 2019, she joined forces with the United Nations’ International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) to support African farmers. In February 2020, the couple kicked-off their lifestyle brand, Sable Labs. The brand focuses on helping young couples to fulfill their goals and dreams together.

One evening in 2016, Sabrina Dhowre met and fell in love with Idris Elba. Despite the whopping 16 years difference between the couple, “the mountain between them” crumbled when they reportedly met at a Jazz bar in Vancouver, Canada in 2016.

As earlier stated, Elba was at the time filming The Mountain Between Us. After first becoming friends, their friendship morphed into a romantic relationship in March 2017. The duo, however, kept it under wraps to avoid the prying eyes of the paparazzi and unforgiving media. A few months later, they appeared together in public at the premiere of Molly’s Game at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2017.

Although Sabrina Dhowre and her husband do not have any kids yet, they are parents to two children from previous relationships. Their first child, a daughter named Isan (b. 2002), was born to Idris Elba and his first wife Hanne Kim. Their second child, a son named Winston (b. 2014), was born to Elba and his former girlfriend Naiyana Garth.

In September 2020, the couple was inundated with congratulatory messages. The cause? Rumors had it that they have welcomed their first child together. The confusion came after an interview in which Elba described his movie character as a father of two boys. Elba later clarified the doubts through a tweet.

The Couple Tested Positive For Covid-19 in 2020

The Coronavirus pandemic of 2019/2020 worked its way into families, towns, and cities, affecting the most powerful individuals in society. It did not spare the Elba’s either.

In April 2020, Idris Elba shared a video confirming that he had tested positive for Covid-19 with an underlying condition of asthma. He soon went into isolation afterward with Sabrina joining him to offer care. She tested positive a few days later. According to reports, they both suffered mild symptoms.

Sabrina Dhowre’s “act of love” gained her a new spot on the Twitter trend table, with so many fans commending her commitment to Idris even in the face of disease and death.
