At birth, he was named Samuel Pack Elliott on August 9, 1944. Elliot was born in Sacramento California but grew up at northeast Portland. His father, Henry Nelson Elliott, made ends meet working as a predator control specialist for the Department of the Interior while his mom, Glynn Mamie (née Sparks) was a physical training instructor and high school teacher. He is the only son of his parents and is of English and Scottish heritage.
Elliott is an alumnus at David Douglas High School and also majored in English and Psychology at the University of Oregan where he spent a few years before opting out. He later finished a two-year program at Clark College. There, he would later begin the acting career he curbed within since he was 9 starring as one of the leads in the stage play; Guys and Dolls. Also, Samuel once worked in a construction company while schooling.

Sam was a part-time actor in the drama series, Lancer and later earned his first film role as a Cardplayer in butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969).
From 1970 till 1971, he starred in various television shows and later got a lead role in the 1975 movie; I Will Fight No More Forever. He subsequently played as Sam Damon in the drama series, Once an Eagle and starred in the film Lifeguard (1976). The following year opened up beautifully for the then young actor, Elliot appeared in the series; Aspen, which also cemented his role as a wife killer in Murder in Texas. He co-starred with Tom Selleck in the series; Louis L’Amour’s. All through the years that followed, Sam Elliott played both in major and minor roles both on television series and in movies. Then came 2015, when he featured in the Netflix series, The Ranch and then, landed a recurring role as Phil Millstein in the seasonal drama series; Grace and Frankie.
