Irish actors such as Jonathan Rhys and Colin Farrell have made their marks in Hollywood while their female counterparts have been lagging behind. However, in recent times, one person is boldly working to change the status quo and she is none other than Sarah Bolger. Bolger is an Irish actress who is making waves in Hollywood. She has appeared in several movies and TV series and has racked up several awards, all in a relatively short period. Bolger definitely has the makings of a Hollywood star, let’s learn more about her.
Sarah Bolger Biography
Sarah Lee Bolger was born on the 28th of February 1991 in Dublin, Ireland. She grew up in the suburb of Rathfarnham and started acting when she was quite young. As a pre-schooler, Bolger took part in several plays staged by her class and was so impressive that her teacher declared her as one to watch. This prophecy proved true six years later when Bolger landed a breakthrough role in the 2002 film, In America.
In America is a road drama about a struggling Irish family that migrates to the US in search of a better life. While the parents (Johnny and Sarah) see America as a dangerous and challenging landscape, their little daughters (Christy and Arielle) see their new home as a magical place which can help them recover from their family tragedy.
In America featured actors such as Paddy Considine and Samantha Morton while Bolger played the role of Christy. Her incredible performance earned her the award for best performance by a youth in a lead or supporting role from the Phoenix Film Critics Society in 2004.
Movies and TV Shows
Since her breakthrough, Sarah Bolger has gone on to feature in numerous movies and TV series. On the small screens, the Dublin native has featured in TV series such as Mayans M.C., Counterpart, Into the Badlands, Once Upon a Time, The Clinic, Mixology, and The Tudors.
The Tudors is a historical fiction TV series which debuted in 2007. The show basically chronicles the reign of King Henry VII, his quest for an heir and the subsequent breakaway of the Church of England. In The Tudors, Bolger played the role of Princess Mary, daughter of Henry and Catherine of Aragon. Her excellent portrayal of the lady who is also known as Bloody Mary earned her the award for Best Supporting Actress (TV) at the 2010 Irish Film & Television Awards.
On the big screen, Sarah Bolger has appeared in movies such as Tara Road, Stormbreaker, The Spiderwick Chronicles, The Moth Diaries, Crush, As Cool as I Am, Kiss Me, My All American, The Lazarus Effect, Halal Daddy, A Good Woman is Hard to Find, and Emelie.
Emelie is a 2015 horror/thriller about a twisted lady who poses as a babysitter for an unwitting family. She proceeds to torment the children once the parents leave for date night. Emelie featured Joshua Rush and Chris Beetem while Bolger played the titular role of Emelie. The Dubliner received praise for her superb interpretation of the role.
Did Sarah Bolger Feature In Game of Thrones?
In July 2012, reports emerged that Bolger would be joining the cast of Game of Thrones, unarguably one of the most popular TV shows of all time. These reports did not specify the character that the Irish actress would be taking on and at the end of the day, Bolger never made an appearance on GoT until it ended in 2019. It is possible that the reports were false or that discussions between the actress and the showrunners were not fruitful.
Whichever it is, Sarah Bolger has not shied away from giving her opinion on various aspects of the show. In a 2015 interview with ETonline, the Tudors star supported the call for equal nudity on Game of Thrones. Female actors often bared it all on the show while their male counterparts don’t have to strip as such. This led to GoT stars such as Kit Harrington and Natalie Dormer calling for equal disrobing on the show. Bolger supported this call stating that if nudity is right, it should be right for whoever is involved whether it is a man or woman.
Her Family Life
Sarah Bolger hails from a tight-knit family of four. Her father’s name is Derek and he runs an organic butcher shop. Her mother’s name is Monica and she is primarily a homemaker. Bolger’s parents encouraged and supported her career from the onset, acting as chauffeurs and agents when necessary. Bolger has a younger sister named Emma. Emma is a budding actress and has appeared in a few productions. She also played the younger sister of Bolger’s onscreen character in the 2002 movie, In America.
