Sean McVay is an American football coach who was brought on as head coach of the Los Angeles Rams of the National Football League (NFL) in January 2017 at the age of 30. This made him the youngest person to ever coach an NFL team as he surpassed the former record held by Lane Kiffin, former Raiders head coach, who was hired by the team in 2007 when he was 31 years old.
Before he joined the Rams, he worked for the Washington Redskins from 2014 to 2016 as the offensive coordinator. In his first year of coaching, he became the youngest person to win the AP NFL Coach of the Year award.
When McVay became the Ram’s head coach, the team had not made it to the playoffs in 14 years. However, from the time he took over, the Los Angeles Rams have not only taken part in the playoffs but also won the NFC Championship in the 2019 season. Following the Rams appearance in Super Bowl LIII which took place on 3 February 2019 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Sean McVay became the youngest head coach to ever coach in a Super Bowl game.
Sean McVay Bio
Sean McVay was born on January 24, 1986, in Dayton, Ohio, but his family later moved to another town when he was 6. With his father and grandfather heavily involved in football, Sean also towed that path from his childhood.
He attended Marist School, Brookhaven, Georgia from where he graduated in 2004. While there, he played football for the school’s team, the War Eagles and became the first player in the history of the school, to record 1,000 yards rushing and passing in consecutive seasons. During his career, he made a total of 2,600 rushing yards, 40 rushing touchdowns, 2,500 yards passes, and 18 touchdowns. In his senior year, he led the team to a 26–3 record, including a 14–1 record and state championship and also won the Georgia 4A Offensive Player of the Year award.
After high school, Sean McVay moved on to Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, where he played as a wide receiver for the Miami RedHawks from 2004 to 2007 and earned Miami’s Scholar-Athlete Award in 2007. He graduated in 2008 with a record of 39 receptions for 312 yards.
Sean kicked off his coaching career in 2008 as an assistant wide receivers coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In 2009, he became the quality control/wide receivers coach for the Florida Tuskers of the United Football League (UFL) and the following year, he joined the Washington Redskins as he was hired to serve as the team’s assistant tight ends coach.
Sean was promoted to tight ends coach in 2011 and he held the position through the 2013 season. The Redskins hired a new coach, Jay Gruden, who deemed it fit to promote Sean to offensive coordinator on January 14, 2014.
On January 12, 2017, Sean McVay who was 30 years, 11 months, and 19 days old, was hired as the 28th head coach of the Los Angeles Rams, becoming the youngest head coach since the NFL was established. He made his season debut as a head coach on September 10, 2017, in the game against the Indianapolis Colts.
Family
Sean is the son of Tim and Cindy McVay. He is the third generation of the McVay family involved in football. His father played as a defensive back for the University of Indiana during his college days while his grandfather, John McVay, was the head football coach at the University of Dayton from 1965-1972. Sean’s grandfather also served for 21 years as the former general manager of the San Francisco 49ers, helping them to win the Super Bowl for five seasons.
