Silverbird Cinema: Locations And Best Ways To Enjoy Yourself

Silverbird cinema has been hailed for furthering the course of cinema culture in Nigeria where its first complex opened in 2004. That particular Silverbird cinema building is still located in Victoria Island, Lagos.

As part of the Silverbird group, the Silverbird cinema has continued to open various branches in different parts of the country and has since become one of the biggest cinemas in West Africa with 69 screens in branches across Nigeria, Accra and Nairobi. The massive commercial success that the Silverbird cinema seems to enjoy was seemingly disputed in 2016.

In 2016, the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) took over the assets of the lawmaker representing Nigeria’s Bayelsa east senatorial district, Senator Ben Bruce, who co-owns the Silverbird cinema. The agency had alleged that the Silverbird Group was indebted to them to the tune of N11 billion.

The Silverbird Galleria at 133 Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island, Lagos, Silverbird Galleria at Plot No 1161, Central Area Cadastral Zone AOO, Abuja; and Silverbird properties at Abonnema Wharf Road and Abali Park in Port Harcourt, Rivers state were all affected. Operations at the various gallerias continued, practically, without event even as other parts of the business were affected.

Silverbird Group

The parent company – Silverbird Group – is a wholly Nigerian owned company established in 1980. It was started by Ben Murray Bruce and soon revolutionized FM Radio in Nigeria in 1997 when it set up Silverbird’s Rhythm 93.7 FM, Lagos.

In 2002 and 2003, Silverbird Group grew to establish radio stations in Abuja and Port Harcourt. Silverbird’s Rhythm 93.7 FM and STV commenced transmission in Benin and Jos in 2008. Awka and Yenagoa are due to commence operations in 2009. Silverbird Television commenced transmission in Lagos in 2003, and was voted the most entertaining TV station in 2005.

In 2004, Silverbird opened an international Shopping Mall in Lagos, which also has the first 5- screens Cineplex in sub-Saharan Africa. There is also a Silverbird 6 – screen cinema in Accra Mall, Ghana, and another 4- screen cinema in Nairobi, Kenya.

Despite the troubles of 2016, the Silverbird cinema has remained one of the chief spots to visit for locals wherever it is located. Silverbird cinema offers more than just movies. There are concession stands in each of the gallerias that offer a variety of food and drinks. Selections for drinks include Pepsi, Pepsi Lite, 7up, Mirinda, Banaiz Drink, Aquafina Table Water, H20, Schweppes, Sprite, Five Alive, and Bitter lemon.
