Stephen Tyrone Colbert is best known for being the television host for the shows The Colbert Report which ran on air from 2005 to 2014, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert which has been on air since 2015. In addition to being a TV host, he is also a comedian, writer, producer, and has made several on-screen appearances as an actor. Stephen Colbert’s Age and Early Life
Stephen Colbert was born into a large Catholic family in Washington, D.C. on the 13th of May, 1964. The youngest of 11 children, Colbert grew up in James Island, South Carolina with his parents and siblings. He began his education at the Porter-Gaud School, when he got to high school he was a member of both the drama and press clubs. Enrolling in the Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia in 1982, he majored in Philosophy. His interest in theatre arts didn’t wane and while in college he continued to participate in plays. After two years in Hampden-Sydney, Stephen transferred to Northwestern University where he decided to major in theatre. He graduated two years later from the University’s School of Communication.
After graduating in 1986, Colbert went to work for The Second City, the famed Chicago improvisation enterprise best known for its improvisational theatre troupe. He worked menial jobs for the company before taking advantage of the company’s free acting classes at their training center. The company, realizing his talent in comedy, hired him to perform with their touring group. While on the road, he struck up a relationship with fellow actors Amy Sedaris and Paul Dinello. The trio would then go on to create their own TV series for the television network HBO, a 30-minute series titled Exit 57. It debuted on the comedy channel Comedy Central and received rave reviews in addition to five award nominations in 1995.
In 1997, after Exit 57 concluded, Colbert joined the cast of The Daily Show, a parody series. At the time the show was hosted by Craig Kilborn who was then succeeded by the more popularly known Jon Stewart in 1999. His years working as part of the cast on The Daily Show earned Colbert major popularity, and by 2005 he was the host of his own television show, The Colbert Report. Stephen Colbert was offered a job as the host of The Late Show prior to the conclusion of The Colbert Report. The late-night talk show was at the time hosted by David Letterman, and Colbert was slated to take over from him once Letterman retired. Stephen Colbert is the last of eleven children born to James William Colbert Jr. and Lorna Elizabeth Tuck. Colbert Jr. was a physician, immunologist, and vice president of academic affairs at the Medical University of South Carolina. His wife Lorna was a stay-at-home mother. His father and his two older brothers Peter and Paul died in a plane crash when Stephen was ten years old. The boys died with their father on their way to enroll in school in Connecticut. After the incident, his mother moved the family to the more urban Charleston, South Carolina. Stephen Colbert’s wife Evelyn Brabham McGee-Colbert is the daughter of a prominent civil litigator and was born on the 23rd of July 1963 in Charleston, South Carolina. She is an actress and has made several television and silver screen appearances. One of her acting roles included an appearance in one of the installations of the famous fantasy series The Hobbit.
She graduated from the University of Virginia’s College of Arts and Science in 1985 armed in English and Drama.
