Sunmi is a multi-award-winning South Korean singer and songwriter who was first ushered to the limelight as a member of the South Korean girl group, Wonder Girls. The girl group was formed by the South Korean multinational entertainment and record label conglomerate, JYP Entertainment Corporation. After debuting with the group in 2007, she took a three-year break from music in 2010 to focus on her academics before returning to the music scene with her first Extended Play (EP), ‘Full Moon’ as a solo artist in August 2013. With her smooth voice, sensational moves and blazing innocent beauty, Sunmi has moved to become a great force to be reckoned with in K-pop. Who Is Sunmi And How Old Is She?
The amazing K-pop singer was born as Lee Sun-mi on 2nd May 1992 in Iksan, North Jeolla, South Korea. She was brought up in her hometown along with her two younger brothers, Lee Sun Dong and Lee Seung Dong by her single father. The identities of her parents are unknown at the moment as the K-pop sensation has not disclosed any information regarding them to the media.
Sunmi has always dreamt of becoming a celebrity since she was younger, in order to take care of her family and father who later became sick. Sadly, her father passed away three months to her debut in 2007, years after she became a trainee at JYP Entertainment at the age of fourteen. Following her father’s demise, she and her brothers were adopted by a family whose surname (Lee) they later took up. For her academics, Sunmi acquired her elementary education from Hwangnam Elementary School and Chungdam Middle School. She is also an alumna of Chungdam High School. She furthered her education by enrolling at Dongguk University where she majored in Musical Theatre.
Sunmi began her career in May 2006 when she was unveiled as the fourth member of the girl group, Wonder Girls under JYP Entertainment. The group got mainstream attention with the release of their first mini-album, ‘The Wonder Years’ with hit tracks like ‘Tell Me’, ‘Nobody’, and ‘Headache’, as the album topped the South Korean albums chart. JYP Entertainment released an official statement in January 2010 that Sunmi will embark on a break after completing their scheduled events in February to focus on her academics. The company, however, announced her imminent return to the music scene in August 2013, this time not as a Wonder Girls member but as a solo artist.
Sunmi’s debut solo single named ’24 Hours’ was released on 26th August 2013. It became an instant hit as it was a major success and clinched top spots on many music charts. The song reached the 2nd position on South Korea’s Goan Digital chart, 3rd position on Billboard’s Korean K-pop Hot 100 chart, and 13th position on Billboard’s World Digital Chart. Following the success of her first single, the famous singer released her first Extended Play titled, ‘Full Moon’ on 17th February 2014 which contained her first single ’24 Hours’; it was also a huge hit.
Interestingly, Sunmi rejoined the girl band, Wonder Girls in 2015 after withdrawing in 2010. They dropped their third album, ‘Reboot’ in August 2015 of which she co-wrote and co-produced three of its tracks. She once again contributed as a co-writer and co-producer of two tracks in their 2016 single album, ‘Why So Lonely’, which includes a title track of the same name. Following the disbandment of Wonder Girls as a result of an unproductive contract renewal negotiation with Sunmi and Yeeun (another member of the band) on 26th January 2017, the girl band dropped their final single titled, ‘Draw Me’ on 10th February 2017 at their 10th-anniversary celebration.
Sunmi then signed a contract with Makeus Entertainment in March 2017. She dropped her first single ‘Gashina’ with the new record label on the 22nd of August 2017. The single peaked at No. 3 on the US World Digital Song Sales as it recorded 1.9 million digital downloads in South Korea alone in 2017 and became the 32nd best-selling song of the year, according to Goan Music Chart. She followed it up with the release of another single ‘Heroine’ on 18th January 2018 which she described as a prequel to ‘Gashina’.
In addition, the gorgeous singer released her second EP, ‘Warning’ on 4th September 2018 with its lead single ‘Siren’ achieving an all-kill on music charts. While on her first world tour titled, ‘Warning’, Sunmi released a single, ‘Noir’ on 4th March 2019 and later dropped another single titled, ‘Lalalay’ on 27th August 2019 after completing her world tour. Her career achievements include winning many awards for her innovative style of music and dance; she has bagged Mnet Asian Music Awards, Goan Chart Music Awards, Asia Artist Awards and many others.
