Some months back, it came to light that The Voice, a popular American reality TV singing competition would be hosted in Nigeria and indeed it launched yesterday, 10th April.
The aim of the show is to find new singing talents who will be awarded a cash price and a record deal.
The aspiring singers are usually guided by coaches who also serve as judges. The coaches guide the singers in their team to not just make them come out top but also emerge the winning coach.
The coaches hosting The Voice Nigeria are, 2baba, Timi Dakolo, Waje and Patoranking.
Anchored by IK Osakioduwa and Stephanie Coker, the show kicked off on African Magic Channels 151 and 153 by 7pm.
The show started with a montage of the coaches/hosts talking about The Voice and what it’s all about.
The first performance of the night was by the coaches as they all performed 2 Baba’s hit song, Implication. The performance went on with each host giving a unique take on the song.
Up next were the blind auditions. With their seats backing the stage, the hosts had to listen to each contestant. If a host likes what he/she hears, he turns his sit around. A contestant needs only one seat turned to get in.
First on stage was Emem, a 17 year old Law student from AkwaIbom who had dropped law to pursue her musical ambition. She sang Waje’s “No be You”, getting all four judges to turn for her– the first 4 turns of the season. The coaches praised her vocal prowess, especially Waje who said that was the hardest song of her career. All coaches tried to lure her to their team, but Emem finally opted for Team Waje.
Next was Tobore Ezekiel, a 30-year old Zoology graduate. He sang his rendition of R Kelly’s “If I could turn back the hands of time” getting 2 Baba to turn for him, making him automatically Team 2baba.
Benjamin ‘Bhen’ a runway model and part-time musician was next. He sang Justin Bieber’s “As long as you love me” but got no turns.
Following Bhen was a Lagosian called A’rese who is a musical theater performer. She sang Adele’s “Skyfall”, causing three hosts, except 2baba o turn for her. She chose Team Waje.
There was also Gabriel a 24-year old student and part time hair stylist who was brought up by a single mum and had to deal with the trauma of a runaway father. Gabriel sang Nick Jonas’ “Jealous”, getting the second 4 turns of the season. He opted for Team 2baba.
Cici a 22-year old singer from Edo state sang Omawumi’s “I go go” but got no turns from the coaches, on the grounds that she played it safe.
Next was a 20 year old called Elizabeth who is a student and part time song writer and performer– which she did in church. She sang her rendition of Jessie J’s “Price tag”, earning her position in Team Patoranking.
Vicky from Bayelsa who started doing vocals to make ends meet, having been on two different singing shows in the past, sang Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing” earning 4 turns from all judges. As all four hosts tried to get her in their team, she decided to go for Team Timi.
