Facts You Probably Didn’t Know About Taeyeon
1. Her father was wary of her idol ambitions
Kim Tae-Yeon was born on the 9th of March 1989 in Jeonju, South Korea. She hails from a family of five comprising her parents, an older brother named Tiwoong, and a younger sister named Kim Haeyeon. Taeyeon inherited her musical abilities from her parents but her father still did not welcome her idol aspirations. He, however, had a change of heart after one of her teachers convinced him that she was genuinely talented.
Following this conviction, Taeyeon’s father not only allowed her to pursue music but also accompanied her to her voice lessons. The young girl was eventually signed by SM Entertainment in 2004 and underwent three years of grueling training. She debuted as a member of Girls Generation in August 2007, and the rest is now history. Girls Generation is unarguably the biggest girl band out of South Korea. They have been described as the Asian version of Spice Girls while Taeyeon has been hailed as the Beyoncé of the group.
2. Her younger sister is training to become an idol
The Girls Generation leader is not the only talented person in her family. Her younger sister, Kim Hayeon, is also a gifted singer and hopes to become an idol someday. Hayeon is currently a trainee with SM Entertainment. She joined their academy in 2015 after passing a non-public audition. Since then, she has maintained a low public profile and only makes an occasional appearance at her sister’s concerts or Snapchat posts. The young lady has also exhibited her vocal prowess by posting covers of several songs including Ellie Goulding’s Love Me Like You Do and Sabrina Carpenter’s Why. It is expected that Hayeon will debut with the next girl group that will be launched by SM Entertainment.
3. She dated fellow idol, Baekhyun
Even though romantic relationships are frowned upon in the k-pop world, Taeyeon is one lady who has no problems following her heart. The singer formerly dated fellow idol, Baekhyun. Baekhyun is a singer and songwriter as well as the main vocalist of the prolific boy band, EXO. Taeyeon and Baekhyun first met in 2011 and started dating in February 2014. The love birds initially kept their relationship under the wraps until it became impossible to deny. The official confirmation of their romance sparked an online backlash from fans of both singers. They later issued individual apology statements to their respective fans. The couple continued their romance but split up in September 2015.
4. She has contributed to the OST of several productions
Asides her illustrious career as a member of Girls Generation, Taeyeon also has a flourishing career as a soloist and actress. She has dropped several chart-topping EPs including I, Why, Something New, and Voice. She has also sold more than 650,000 albums; making her the highest-selling female solo artist in Korea since 2010. A veritable part of Taeyeon’s solo career is soundtracks. She has contributed to the OST of several Korean movies and TV series. They include Beethoven Virus, Heading to the Ground, Athena: Goddess of War, To The Beautiful You, Hotel Del Luna, Mr. Go, and The King 2 Hearts. The Girls Generation leader will also be contributing to the OST of the Disney animation, Frozen 2. Frozen 2 is the sequel to the 2013 Hollywood blockbuster – Frozen.
5. She has at least six tattoos
Taeyeon is short-sighted and relies on a contact lens to deal with the defect. Additionally, the singer is a big fan of tattoos. She presently has six and all of them bear special meaning. Taeyeon’s tattoos include the letters, I, on her thumb and F (for fine), on her 3rd finger. Both are the names of her hit singles. The Girls Generation leader also has a fish, tattooed on the 3rd finger of her left hand, and a Pisces symbol tattooed behind her left ear. Both stand for her zodiac sign which is Pisces. Additionally, the crooner also has the words “Serenity” on her right elbow and “Purpose” at the back of her neck. Purpose stands for direction as the singer does not want to live a life that has no meaning.
