Tiger Woods is arguably the greatest golfer of his generation as well as one of the most successful in the sports’ history. After making his professional golfing debut at the age of 20, Woods went on to become the youngest Masters Tournament winner, reaching number one position in world golf rankings less than a year after making his debut.

Woods has gone ahead to break and hold numerous golf records, including being awarded the PGA Player of the Year a record eleven times while being the highest earning golfer and athlete ever.

Biography

Tiger Woods was born Eldrick Tont Woods to Kultida and Earl Woods Sr. on December 30, 1975 in Cypress, California. He is the only child of his parents although he has half siblings from his father’s first marriage.

As a child, Woods was introduced to golf by his father. He played and practiced his shot all through his childhood at the Navy golf course beside the Joint Forces Training Base in Los Alamitos, California, which he had access to thanks to his father’s military career. He went on to play at and win several youth tournaments. He most notably became the then youngest-ever U.S. Junior Amateur champion.

Woods attended Western High School where he graduated at the age of 18 before enrolling at Stanford University on a golf scholarship. He played collegiate events for two years before deciding to turn professional. In his first year as a pro, he was named PGA Tour Rookie of the Year and Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year. He also signed what was at the time the most lucrative endorsement contracts with Nike and Titleist.

He went on to win his first major in April 1997 and become the fastest player to reach number one in the golf rankings, and as they say, the rest is history.

Parents

Tiger Woods’ parents played a pivotal role in making him become one of the most successful golfers in history as it has been said that he was introduced to the game and coached earlier on in his career by his father while his mother supported him countless times off the course by driving him to tournaments.

His father, Earl Woods Sr., was of African-American origins while his mother, Kultida Woods, is originally from Thailand but of mixed Thai, Chinese, and Dutch ancestry. The couple met in Thailand in 1966 while Earl was stationed in the country as a member of the United States Army. In 1968, she migrated to the US and married Earl a year later to become his second wife. They remained married till his death from prostate cancer in 2006.

Nordegren was at that time working as a nanny for Parnevik’s children. Prior to that, she had worked as a model and a retailer.

In 2009, Tiger Woods was involved in one of the most publicized extra-marital affair cases of the decade after it was widely reported that he had cheated on his wife on multiple occasions with multiple women. The infidelity was revealed in December that year following an accident he had near the family’s Orlando Florida home.

Despite taking time off golf to work on his marriage and apologizing for all he had done in a press conference, the couple decided to part ways and end their six-year-long marriage. They finalized divorce proceedings on August 23, 2010, in the Bay County Circuit Court in Panama City, Florida.
