Thomas Jeffrey Hanks was born on July 9, 1956, in Concord, California, the United States of America. He is the third of four children to Janet Marylyn and Amos Mefford Hanks and is of mixed English and Portuguese heritage.
As a child, Hanks’ family moved around so often that by the time he was about 10, he had lived in ten different cities. His passion for acting manifested in his high school days as he took up roles in school plays. In 1974, he finished his high school education from Skyline High School, Oakland and enrolled at Chabot College in Hayward, California. He later transferred to California State University where studied Theatre.
While still in college, Tom Hanks took an internship that lasted for three years at the Great Lakes Theater Festival in Cleveland, Ohio. He whetted his skills in production, lightening, design and stage management here and decided to quit the university in 1977. As an actor, Hanks won the Cleveland Critics Circle Award for Best Actor in 1978 for his wonderful performance as Proteus in Shakespeare’s The Two Gentlemen of Verona.
A year later, he moved to New York where he got his first movie role in a low-budget film, He Knows You’re Alone. He later appeared in the television series Mazes and Monsters and then got a lead role in the 1980 sitcom Bosom Buddies. He would also star in Splash in 1984, a movie that became a box office hit. Hanks then landed another lead role in Big in 1988. His performance gave him much exposure and fame and most importantly, earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.
Since then, most of the movies in which Tom Hanks had appeared in have grossed billions of dollars at the box office. His joint efforts with renowned film director Steven Spielberg are seen in the following movies; Saving Private Ryan, his mini-series Band Brothers (2001), Catch Me If You Can (2002), The Terminal (2004), Bridge of Spies (2015), The Post (2017). Tom Hanks has been married twice. He and his first wife, actress Samantha Lewes tied the knot in 1978, and their union was blessed with two children; a son named Colin Hanks born in 1977 and a daughter named Elizabeth Ann Hanks born in 1982. The couple parted ways in 1987, giving room for the filmmaker to marry actress Rita Wilson in 1988, a year after his divorce.
Hanks and Wilson previously met on the set of Bosom Buddies in 1981 then reconnected in 1985 on the set of Volunteers. Their union also produced two children; sons Chester Marlon fondly called Chet and Truman Theodore.

Jim, on the other hand, followed in the footsteps of his older brother Tom to become an actor and filmmaker. He is best known for appearing in Deadwater (2008) and A Leading Man (2013) among others.
