Disney’s Queen of Katwe is admittedly one of the most anticipated films of the year. Based on the book of the same name by Tim Crothers, the film tells the story of 10-year-old Phiona Mutesi who moves from selling corn on the streets of rural Uganda to becoming an international chess champion.
Phiona Mutesi’s story is one of community support, and an individual’s journey of confidence and perseverance which eventually leads to a happy ending and the Queen of Katwe tells that story very well.
The Queen of Katwe has as its starring cast, Golden Globe nominee David Oyelowo (Selma), Oscar winner and Tony Award nominee Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave) and newcomer, Madina Nalwanga.
Already packed with so much African energy, the soundtrack lineup of the movie has introduced two hit Nigerian records.
Davido’s 2013 hit song ‘Skelewu’ has been included in the soundtrack for the Disney cinematic production. The second Nigerian song to make it to the lineup is ‘Sekem’, the dance hit by MC Galaxy.
It’s not the first time that a Nigerian song will be featured in an American film production, the 2006 comedy ‘Phat Girlz’ featured the 2face hit song ‘African Queen’ off his debut album Face 2 Face, but it still a huge achievement for both Davido and MC Galaxy.
Davido, who recently signed a deal with Sony and has not brought out any new music for a while – which has exempted him from selections in some recent award shows – and MC Galaxy who won $1600 in a dancing competition hosted by Davido back in 2012, later taking up music and forging an okay career in the field, should be very proud of this win.
The film’s principal soundtrack is performed by American singer Alicia Keys and the film which has started showing in cinemas in the U.S. is already receiving rave reviews.
