Tzuyu (Real Name: Chou Tzu-yu, born 14 June 1999) is a 24-year-old South Korea-based Taiwanese singer. She is best known as a member of the prolific girl band, Twice.

Although the singer and vocalist has played a pivotal part in establishing the band as a global k-pop leader not many of us know that Tzuyu was not initially a part of the final line-up of Twice.

1. She is the Maknae of TWICE Girl Group

Tzuyu is the youngest member of Twice. The dancer, vocalist, and visual artist was born on the 14th of June 1999 in Tainan, Taiwan. She was born into a small Taiwan family comprising her parents and an older brother. Tzuyu spent the first 13 years of her life in Taiwan but later moved to South Korea in 2012 to pursue her training as an idol. Despite becoming an idol at an early age, the singer/dancer did not forget her academics. She completed her high school diploma at Hanlim Multi Art School, South Korea in 2019.

2. She Was Not Part of the Original Line-up of Twice

Twice emerged through the Mnet reality TV competition, Sixteen. The show ran from May to July 2015 and Tzuyu was one of the contestants. She was eliminated in the course of the show while seven ladies made it into the band. However, during the show’s finale, the host announced that two of the eliminated members, Tzuyu and Momo (Japanese vocalist/dancer/rapper), would be joining the band. The former was re-added because she got the highest number of online votes while the latter was re-added because she had skills that would benefit the group. This surprise twist sparked a small controversy as fans complained about the propriety of some eliminated contestants being able to join the band.

3. Tzuyu is a Big Fan of Dogs

The singer-cum-dancer has disclosed that her favorite number is 25. She is also a big fan of Tonkatsu and Kimbap. Tonkatsu is a Japanese dish that primarily consists of deep-fried pork, while Kimbap is a popular Korean picnic dish that consists of bite-sized rice and veggies made to look like sushi. Asides her favorite dishes, Tzuyu also loves dogs. Her family owns a pet dog named Gucci and the singer often shares adorable photos of herself and Gucci on Instagram. The Twice member has also gone ahead to reveal that one of the qualities of her ideal partner is that the person must be a dog lover.

4. She was Named Amongst the Most Beautiful Faces of 2018

Tzuyu is renowned for her striking appearance, complemented by her large eyes and small face. These features earned her second place on TC Candler’s list of the 100 most beautiful faces of 2018. Asides her beauty, the singer is also one of the most beloved idols in South Korea. In 2017, she was ranked 9th on Gallup’s poll of the 20 favorite idols in the country.

5. She Sparked a Flag Controversy in November 2015

Tzuyu inadvertently found herself at the center of political controversy in November 2015. The whole brouhaha started after she and her bandmates appeared on a Korean variety show. In the course of the show, the singer introduced herself as Taiwanese and also waved the Taiwanese flag. Her actions angered people from mainland China and many of them bashed her on the internet.

They accused her of profiting from her mainland Chinese audience whilst holding a pro-independence stance. The whole affair resulted in Tzuyu being barred from Chinese TV. She was also removed from an endorsement deal that her band had with Chinese telecom giants, Huawei. The singer later issued an apology video in which she stated that there was only one China. This particular video sparked another backlash from Taiwanese people who are pro-independence activists.

6. She Reportedly Dated iKON Rapper, B.I

The Twice member has found herself at the centre of several dating rumours. She was rumored to have dated iKON rapper, B.I. She was also rumored to have dated BTS member, Jungkook. All these rumors have however turned out to be false. The singer/dancer is not dating anyone at the moment, rather she is focusing on her career. Meanwhile, she has revealed that her ideal type is someone who understands the importance of family, loves puppies, and eats well.
