The world commiserates with popular Canadian singer Celine Dion on the loss of her husband on Thursday, 14th of January, 2016. The veteran singer’s husband gave up the ghost after 18 long years of battling with throat cancer. The 73-year-old died two days before his 74th birthday, in his home in Las Vegas, surrounded by his loved ones. In a confirmatory statement by his representative on Thursday, “The family requests that their privacy be respected at the moment”.
Rene Angelil, the son of a Syrian father and a Lebanese mother was first diagnosed with throat cancer in 1999; and since then, Celine’s undying support has been unquestionably evident. After his 2013 surgery, Celine took an indeterminate leave from work to nurse her husband back to good health.
In her words,
“There’s a part of me that never really left the stage. I wanted to be there but I needed to be someplace else which was much more important at that time. To be by his side. To be by my family.” Going further on she says “He’s been there for me all my life, and I’ve been there for him all my life.”
Behind this tragedy is a love story worth telling and sharing. Rene and Celine have been married for 22 strong and long years. In 1980, at age 12, Celine Dion was discovered by Rene who was a POP singer at the time. He raised her professionally and managed her career and rise to stardom.
In December 1994, they got married, making Celine his third and as it is long-lasting wife. Rene is a father of 6 children (3 from Celine Dion); and a grandfather of 7 children. Irrespective of the huge age difference, they both made an exemplary union especially for the entertainment industry.
Canadian born Rene started off himself as a pop star in the 60’s before taking up artist management; he loved playing poker, so much so that in 2005, he qualified to play for the World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions.
