Waka Flocka once nursed the ambition of becoming a professional basketball player, however, this changed following his encounter with rapper, Gucci Mane, who inspired him to become a musician. Who is Waka Flocka?
It was on the 31st of May, 1986 that the rapper was born as Juaquin James Malphurs, in South Jamaica, Queens, New York. While the identity of his father is not known, his mother is Debra Antney.
Despite being born in New York, Flocka was raised in Atlanta, Georgia, with his four siblings; Kayo Redd, Wooh Da Kid, Rahleek Malphurs, Tyquam Alexander. Despite the fact that his mother runs an entertainment company that manages A-list music artists, he wasn’t interested in music, but rather spent most of his time playing basketball. He, however, later caught the bug as he picked interest in music, developing a knack for writing hip-hop songs. He was further inspired to pursue a musical career after witnessing the stage performance of Gucci Mane, who was his mom’s client.
Waka Flocka’s stage name was given to him by his cousin before Gucci Mane added “Flame” to the alias. In 2008, Waka Flocka Flame released his first mix-tape titled, ‘Salute Me or Shoot Me Volume 1’. One of the singles in the mix-tape titled, ‘O let’s Do It’, became a commercial success. Two years later, the rapper launched his debut album that was inspired by Tupac Shakur, titled, ‘Flockaveli’. The album was a huge hit, clinching the number six spot on the Billboard 200 chart. He then moved on to release an album in conjunction with Gucci Mane titled ‘Ferrari Boyz’ in 2011.
In the next year, Flocka dropped his second studio album titled, ‘Triple F-Life: Friends, Fans and Family’ where he collaborated with great artists like Nicki Minaj, Meek Mill, Ludacris, and Drake. He followed it up by producing many mixtapes which include ‘DuFlocka Rant2’, ‘Roches to Rollies’, ‘Flockaveli 1.5’ and many more. His career has been adorned with a BET Hip-Hop Awards for Best Club Banger, which he claimed in 2011.
Waka Flocka met his future wife Tammy Rivera Williams in Miami, in 2011. The couple got married in May 2014 without a ceremony but with a pre-nuptial agreement that said if they can stay together for five years, they will celebrate their union flamboyantly. Although their marriage hit rock bottom in June 2016 due to the speculation of Flocka’s infidelity, they never gave up on each other as they eventually reconciled and had their dream wedding at a Mexican beach in January 2019. While their union has not produced any child yet, Tammy Rivera has a daughter named Charlie, who was born in July 2005 before her marriage to the famed rapper.
Flocka’s wife is a TV personality, singer, fashion designer, and a businesswoman. She co-starred alongside her husband in the VH1 reality TV series, Love & Hip-Hop: Atlanta.
The award-winning rapper’s mom is a mother of eight children; birthing five boys and adopting three girls. Her father was a drug addict and this led her into peddling drugs as a teen. Debra later turned a new leaf and worked hard to become a distinguished personality in the entertainment industry. She is the founder and CEO of So Icey/Mizay Entertainment which manages many high profile rappers like Nicki Minaj, Gucci Mane, French Montana and her son, Waka Flocka.
As mentioned above, Waka Flocka has four brothers, one of which tragically passed away on the 29th of December 2013. His younger brother Kayo Redd, who was also a rapper, died mysteriously at his home in Georgia after promoting his new mix-tape titled, ‘Redd Kisses’ on Twitter. According to some sources, it was alleged that he committed suicide. This incident really affected Flocka and made him change his lifestyle and perception about life as he believed that stress contributed to his brother’s death. After Redd’s demise, his family found out that he had a daughter named, Ittila Scott.
