B1A4 is a South Korean boy band created in 2011 by WM Entertainment who also manages other successful groups including Oh My Girl and ONF. With the release of their debut single, ‘O.K’ from their first extended play titled ‘Let’s Fly’, the five-member band soon became one of the best new South Korean bands at the time. After releasing seven extended plays, eight studio albums which comprised of three Korean and five Japanese albums that were all critically and commercially successful (both in Korea and Japan), WM Entertainment announced on 30th June 2018 that two members of B1A4, Baro and Jinyoung have called it quits with the record label. Hence, the current B1A4 members consist of CNU, Sandeul, and Gongchan. Here, we bring you the detailed and updated profiles of the current B1A4 members and why Jinyoung and Baro left.
The Current B1A4 Members
CNU is a South Korean singer and actor who is popularly known as the lead songster, dancer and rapper of the South Korean boy band, B1A4. He was born as Shin Dong-woo on 16th June 1991 in Cheongju, North Chungcheong, South Korea. Having being inclined toward music since childhood, he created a rock band with his buddy, Jooyoung during his teen.
Following his graduation from Bongmyung High School, he enrolled at Hanyang University, Department of Theatre and Film and graduated with a degree in theatre and film. He was unveiled as the last B1A4 member by WM Entertainment on 11th April 2011. After debuting with the boy band on 23rd April 2011 with their single, ‘O.K’ and mini album ‘Let’s Fly’, CNU has featured in B1A4’s six mini albums and four studio albums. Besides singing, rapping and dancing, he has contributed in the production and writing of the group’s songs including ‘Wonderful Tonight’, ‘Beautiful Target’, ‘Good Love’, and ‘Amazing’. As an actor, CNU has appeared in many TV and stage productions which include Sent From Heaven, Chess, The Three Musketeers, and Hamlet. After renewing his contract with WM Entertainment in 2018, it’s still unclear whether he will launch a solo music career or continue as a B1A4 member.
Professionally known as Sandeul, Lee Jung-hwan is a South Korean singer and actor, who is well known as the songster of the South Korean boy band, B1A4. He was born on 20th March 1992 in Busan, South Korea. Before debuting as a B1A4 member on 23rd April 2011, he has contested in many singing competitions and following his 2 years training with WM Entertainment, Sandeul was unveiled as the fourth member of B1A4 on 11th April 2011 along with Jinyoung, Baro and Gongchan. The talented singer went on to debut as a soloist on 4th October 2016 with his first extended play, ‘Stay As You Are’ which he wrote and composed many of its songs.
After renewing his contract with WM Entertainment in April 2018, Sandeul dropped his second extended play titled, ‘One Fine Day’ on 3rd June 2019 with six singles. His songwriting and production credits include ‘This Love’, ‘I’m Fine’, B1A4’s ‘Humming Bird’, and ‘Like A Child’. His theatre and TV credits include Iron Mask, All Shook Up, Thirty Something, and Brother Were in the Brave.
Gongchan is the professional name of the South Korean singer and actor who serves as a songster, dancer and Face of the South Korean boy band as well as the youngest B1A4 member (maknae). He was born as Gong Chan-sik on 14th August 1993 in Suncheon, South Korea. After being a trainee for two years with WM Entertainment, Gongchan was unveiled as the third member of the boy band, B1A4 on 11th April 2011. He served as one of the MC’s of KBS program, A Song For You season 4 along with Kangbin and F(X)’s Amber. Also, It’s still uncertain whether he will continue as a B1A4 member or as a soloist after signing a new contract with WM Entertainment. His video game and TV credits include I Need Romance, Delicious Love, and Travel Through Romance.
Why Did Jinyoung and Baro Leave?
After the expiration of their initial 7-years contract with WM Entertainment in April 2018, Jinyoung who was the leader and lead songster of the boy band, B1A4 and Baro who was their main rapper called it quits with the record label as they decided to jump ship to continue their respective career paths. In the official statement released by WM Entertainment on 30th June 2018, they stated that Jinyoung and Baro will not be renewing their contracts after a long negotiation period and that they will focus on the reorganization and reconstruction of B1A4 with the remaining three members. Furthermore, Jinyoung signed a contract with a new agency named LINK8 on 8th July 2018 while Baro signed an acting contract with HODU&U Entertainment on 16th July 2018.
