Not only has this band conquered the world of music in South Korea but they have also expanded their musical prowess to Japan. BIGBANG members are known as the key influencers of K-pop and are even referred to as the Kings of K-Pop. This boy band is known for its explorative sense of various music genres such as K-Pop, J-Pop, hip-hop, dance, electronic, and even R&B.

BIGBANG members made their official debut at the Olympic Gymnastics Area located in Seoul on the 19th of August, 2006. They also released This Love, an adaptation of a song written and performed by the popular American band Maroon 5. In December 2006, they had their first concert which held about twelve thousand fans. That same year, they released their first studio album Bigbang Vol. 1- Since 2007 and although it earned an average reception and success, their subsequent musical projects achieved greater successes and bagged them many awards.

Who Are the Members of BIGBANG?

Currently, there are four members of the boy band; G-Dragon, T.O.P, Taeyang, and Daesung. Seungri used to be a member but retired from music in 2019.

Although he is known popularly by his stage name G-Dragon, his real name is Kwon Ji-Yong and he is a South Korean singer and rapper. From the young age of 12, he was trained by YG Entertainment for six years. In 2006, he joined BIGBANG members to become the leader of the group. He is often described as the King of K-Pop. In 2009, he released a solo album titled Heartbreaker and this album easily became the best-selling album, bagging him the Album of the Year Award at the 2009 Mnet Asian Music Awards. G-Dragon is also popular for being a fashion icon and is recognized for his influence on youth culture and fashion. Forbes listed him as the most influential person under 30 in Asia’s entertainment and sports.

T.O.P

T.O.P

His real name is Choice Seung-Hyun and he is a rapper, singer, and actor. He became famous after becoming one of the popular boy band BIGBANG’s members. He has also released two digital singles titled Turn It Up and Doom Dad and these songs rose quickly to the top of the Gain Digital Chart. He also released a joint album with G-Dragon in 2010 called GD & TOP. T.O.P began acting in 2007 and has featured in many movies such as I am Sam, Into the Fire, Nineteen, Commitment, and Tazza: The Hidden Card.

Taeyang

Described as one of the best vocalists in South Korea, Taeyang, whose real name is Dong Young-bae, is a singer and dancer. He received training from YG entertainment and in 2006, became one of BIGBANG members. Taeyang also has a very successful solo career outside the group. His first EP titled Hot won the Best R&B & Soul Album Award at the Korean Music Awards. His single Eyes, Nose, Lips rose to the number one spot on the Billboard K-Pop Hot 100 and also won the Song of the Year Award at the 29th Golden Disc Awards and the 2014 Mnet Asian Music Awards.

Daesung is a South Korean singer, actor, and television personality who is well known for being one of the popular band BIGBANG’s members. He is also a successful solo artist as his single Look at Me Gwisoon was number one on the charts in 2008. He has also released 4 solo albums with the last two becoming number one albums. He also hosted the talk show Night After Night in 2010 and featured in the musical drama series titled What’s Up.

Seungri, whose real name is Lee Seung-Hyun, was a South Korean singer, songwriter, actor, producer, and DJ who left the music industry to focus on his acting and other entrepreneurial endeavors. He became one of BIGBANG’s members in 2006, staying with the group until his departure in 2019. Seungri was forced to resign completely from the entertainment industry after he was alleged to supply prostitutes in 2015 in the ongoing Burning Sun scandal.

Are BIGBANG Still Together?

On the 9th of February, 2017, T.O.P enlisted for his two-year military service according to South Korea’s mandatory service requirement. The other BIGBANG members went on touring and promoting their discography without him. Their fifth annual Japanese tour, the Last Dance Tour, was held in November 2017. The tour was covered in 14 concerts and had an attendance of over six hundred thousand fans. In 2018, G-Dragon, Taeyang, and Daesung enlisted for their mandatory military service. Seungri began his enlistment in 2019.

Their single, Flower Road, released on the 13th of March, 2018 was a goodbye song to their fans. It set a record in China, with over a million sales in just under four days; a first for any Korean artist. On the 6th of July, 2019, T.O.P became the first member to finish their military service. The group is still together, with the management awaiting the discharge of other members from military service.
