Who is Mike Farrell, How Old is He?

Born Michael Joseph Farrell Jr. in Saint Paul, Minnesota, the U.S on the 6th of February 1939, Mike grew up as one of 4 children. His parents Michael Joseph Farrell Sr and Agnes Saral Cosgrove moved to Hollywood, California when he was 2 years old due to his father’s job as a movie carpenter. Mike attended West Hollywood Grammar School and Hollywood High School.

Mike Farrell enlisted with United States Marine Corps in the 1950s for two years where he served at Camp Hansen, Okinawa. He then attended the University of California, Los Angeles to study acting after his discharge. He thus began his acting career and soon began to appear in big roles.

Career Achievements

The veteran has featured in over 50 roles in films, TV movies and TV Series in his acting career. The bulk of his acting has been in TV Movies. He had his big break with the role of B.J. Hunnicutt in M*A*S*H. While he was on the show, he wrote 5 episodes and directed 4. Some of his notable movies and TV series includes The Graduate (1967), Days of Our Lives (1968), The Interns (1970), The Man and the City (1971), The Questor Tapes (1973), Providence (1999- 2002), Out at the Wedding (2007), Supernatural (2012), The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story (2018), and NCIS (2019), to mention a few.

Mike Farrell started a partnership with Marvin Minoff- film and TV producer to create a production company called Farrel/Minoff Productions. They produced several television movies together. They also executive produced 2 feature films, one of which is Dominick and Eugene (1988) which earned actor Tom Hulce a best actor Golden Globe nomination and Patch Adams (1998) which starred Robin Williams. Mike’s professional partnership with Minoff lasted for over 25years until Minoff died in 2009.

The actor has always been a lobbyist and activist way before he became well known. He has lent his voice to various social and political causes. He was one of the people that spoke strongly about the firing of a gay teacher. For ten years, he was the co-chair of the California Human Rights Watch. He has been the president of Death Penalty Focus for more than a decade and was the first to be awarded it’s Human Rights Award. He was one of the Board of Advisors for the Cult Awareness Network. He also narrated a public service campaign for PETA about animal abuse and received their 2001 Humanitarian Award.

Mike was also very outspoken about the United States involvement in El Salvador and was in Central America, helping refugees from the Civil war. He is also an advisor on the Military Religious Freedom Foundation Board. He was a member of California’s Commission on Judicial performance between February 1998 and February 2001.

Mike is also an accomplished writer. His works include an autobiography titled Just Call Me Mike: A Journey to Actor and Activist published in 2007. The book chronicles his childhood in West Hollywood, personal life, acting career and his involvement in politics and activism. His 2nd book is titled Of Mule and Man published in 2009.

Mike Farrell has been married twice. He first married Judy Hayden in 1963. They welcomed two children (Michael and Erin) during the course of their marriage and got separated in 1980 before finally divorcing in 1983. He married Shelley Fabares – an actress in 1984 and they have remained married till date.

He is also a very active member of the Screen Actors Guild. He was elected as the Guild’s first vice president in Los Angeles in 2002.
