Nigeria’s Playwright and Africa’s first Nobel Laureate for literature, Professor Wole Soyinka has confirmed that he has destroyed his green card.
The action is coming after he had promised to leave the United States if Trump was elected president, six days before the US election. Speaking to a students audience at Oxford University’s Ertegun House on November 2, 2016, the writer said: “If in the unlikely event he does win, the first thing he’ll do is to say [that] all green-card holders must reapply to come back into the US. Well, I’m not waiting for that.”
In an interview with the Atlanta where he spoke on many other things, Soyinka said he has destroyed the card and is no longer part of the American Society.
“As long as Trump is in charge, if I absolutely have to visit the United States, I prefer to go in the queue for a regular visa with others. I’m no longer part of the society, not even as a resident,” he said.
In what he had described as “Wolexit”, Soyinka said he has delivered himself from uncertainty, discomfort, and internal turmoil. He has predicted before the elections that he was beginning to feel destruction in his marrows, as Trump’s wall was being constructed in minds.
Wole Soyinka has had a long history of activism in Nigeria and it was this that has forced him to the US in the 90’s. He obtained his Green Card with the help of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter when he was on “political sabbatical” at Emory University.
The 82-year-old has, however, stated that he is not inviting anyone to join him in such an action. He described the action as “personal” and “private”, hence “[n]o one else is invited.”
It will be recalled that many others had threatened to take various actions including leaving the US if Trump was elected, however, most have gone silent or bluntly backed out of it.
